The University of Michigan's Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning presents...Research Through Making.

Historically, research and creative practice have been constructed as "opposites." This is not an unusual struggle in architecture schools, particularly in the context of a research university. This perceived tension between design and research is indicative of age-old anxieties within the architecture field to understand its nature as an "applied art." Design can be a purely creative activity not unlike creative practices in music and art. In other cases, design can be a purely problem solving activity, not unlike research in engineering and industrial production.

In its seventh year, University of Michigan Taubman College's Research Through Making (RTM) Program provides seed funding for faculty research, worked on by faculty, students and interdisciplinary experts. The exhibition presents tangible results of their collaborative work.

Presentation of projects will start at 6:00pm in the Art & Architecture Building Auditorium, with a reception to follow at the Liberty Annex.

Research Through Making Installations:

"Tap"
Adam Fure

"Panots & Mosiacs: The Plasticity of Hydraulic Cement through Making"
Ana Morcillo Pallares and Jonathan Rule

"Dip and Dive in the D"
Claudia Wigger

"Infundibuliforms: Cable Robot Actuated Kinetic Environments"
Wes McGee, Geoffrey Thün, Kathy Velikov

"Post Rock"
Meredith Miller and Thom Moran

Grant submissions were anonymously evaluated by a distinguished jury from outside the college:

Benjamin Ball, Lead Artist and Principal, Ball-Nogues Studio
Brooke Hodge, Deputy director, Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum
Mark Lamster, Architecture critic, The Dallas Morning News

This exhibition runs from March 10 - April 15.

The Liberty Gallery is located at 305 W. We have explored the scope of this reaction in a broad context using inter- and intramolecular cycloaddition with diverse dienophiles. The synthesis of (+)-malbrancheamide B and other natural products will be discussed. [2.2.2]-diazabicyclic structures can also be diverted through a merged cycloreversion process to afford 2-pyridone scaffolds. Our current understanding of cycloreversion process and applications of the chemistry will be detailed. Jonathan Scheerer, College of William and Mary,
Among the pre-Qin Chinese texts, the Zhuangzi has proved to be one of the hardest to pin down and has lead to a variety of discussions concerning whether the authors of the text are relativists, or skeptics (and, if so, what kind), or whether they simply subscribe to a form of intuitionism that does not do away with the possibility of attaining knowledge about the world, but doubts our ability to communicate it via speech. A common interpretational route is to focus on skill stories and suggest a dichotomy between “the physical world” and “discursive thought,” which is expected to make skills ineffable and unteachable. This presentation will examine various skill stories, along with what might be considered alternative teaching scenes in the text. I too will thus examine skill stories in relation to the broader discussions on the issue of the limits of the linguistic sphere in the Zhuangzi, however following the lead of scholars such as Moeller and Geaney, among others, I will resist reading a language/reality or representation/presence dichotomy into the text. I will instead inquire into the possibility that part of the difficulty in teaching a skill to others is the fact that it requires mastery and negotiation of multiple skill sets of which linguistic skills are a part.

Sonya Özbey is the Tang Junyi Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Michigan’s Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies. Her primary research field is pre-Qin Chinese philosophy. She is also interested in comparative approaches to philosophy that trace a topic across different philosophical streams and inquire into different articulations of it. She is currently revising a book manuscript on the trope of animality and the human/animal distinction in the Zhuangzi and Spinoza.
(Registration link under "Web and Social" at the bottom the page)

Gain inspiring and practical research-based strategies for building organizations that are high performing and bring out the best in people. Join us at the Positive Links Speaker Series to learn from leading Positive Organizational scholars. Connect with our community of academics, students, staff, and leaders at our receptions that immediately follow each session.

HOSTED BY: Gretchen Spreitzer, the Faculty Co-Director at the Center for Positive Organizations; the Keith E. and Valerie J. Alessi Professor of Business Administration; and Professor of Management and Organizations at Michigan Ross

SESSION DESCRIPTION: The prevailing wisdom on crisis management is that crises and their aftermaths are best addressed by a small team of people that carefully manages and controls information and that operates with clearly defined roles and responsibilities. In this session, Davis-Blake will explore the recovery of the Ross School of Business from a significant crisis that included strategic, financial, and academic elements. By inverting the rules of crisis management (e.g., sharing information widely, including many people, allowing roles and responsibilities to be emergent), the Ross School achieved seemingly impossible results. Davis-Blake will explore the potential generalizability of the case of the Ross School to other organizations.

ALISON DAVIS-BLAKE is the Edward J. Frey Dean of the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan. She is also the Stephen M. Ross Professor of Business. Davis-Blake is a higher education leader at the forefront of developing, promoting, and implementing positive business practices and foreseeing the changing educational and workplace needs of the next generation of business leaders.

Upon becoming dean of Michigan Ross in July 2011, the first female dean in the school’s history, Davis-Blake brought a new focus and mission to the school: to develop leaders who make a positive difference in the world. Her belief that business can be economically prosperous and a force for good has resonated with students from around the world who desire to study at Ross, one of the top business schools in the country, and to learn how to develop and lead companies that create value for both shareholders and society.

Davis-Blake is building on Ross’ prestige and tradition of excellence to position the school as a leader in lifelong business education through analytic rigor, a boundaryless approach to learning, action-oriented lessons inside and outside of the classroom, and the school’s global leadership position in positive business education.

As dean at Ross, Davis-Blake has led academic innovations including reframing undergraduate business education through a new BBA curriculum focused on preparing millennial learners for the jobs of tomorrow, the creation of a new Master of Management Program, and expanding the top-ranked Executive MBA Program to Los Angeles.

Under her leadership, Ross has experienced global growth, with expanded activities in India, China, Southeast Asia, and a living business model in Africa. As the dean of a top global business school, Davis-Blake has increased international learning opportunities for students by 89 percent and formed 17 new partnerships with universities around the world.

Her efforts to expand the breadth of faculty thought leadership have resulted in 25 tenure-track faculty members and 30 lecturers, constituting 27% of the teaching faculty at the school. During her time as dean, Ross has been recognized by Bloomberg Businessweek as having the highest proportion of female faculty who are tenured or on the road to tenure of any top 10 business school and the highest percentage of tenured women professors.

During Davis-Blake’s deanship, Ross will raise more than $400 million in private support to advance academics, scholarship, and faculty research; and complete the business campus of the future, spearheaded by a $100 million gift from Stephen M. Ross in 2013, one of the largest single donations to a business school in history.

Davis-Blake is a recognized thought leader, with media outlets throughout the world including the Financial Times, Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg Businessweek, The Guardian, South China Morning Post, Crain’s, and others seeking her perspective on the future of business education, positive business, educational trends, leadership and more.

Prior to joining Ross in 2011, Davis-Blake was dean of the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota from 2006 to 2011, where she was also the first female dean.
Author Sara Kosiba, Troy University in Alabama, reads from and discusses the book What Happens, a Library of Michigan 2016 Notable Book that she recently edited.

What Happens was originally published in France in 1926 by John Herrmann, who was a Lansing, Michigan native. It was seized by U.S. Customs for violating the 1922 Tariff Act, which banned the importing of obscene materials from foreign countries; the novel has never been published in the United States, until now. Hermann attended U-M from 1920-22, and the university is referenced throughout the coming-of-age novel. As part of the expatriate literary circle in Paris in the '20s, he became friends with Ernest Hemingway and other prominent writers.",
