Talk Title: Biomedical Data Science: The Hope, Hype, and Promise

Abstract: Data science was introduced as a “new” profession in the early 1960s, yet the Office of Data Science Strategy at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) was not established until 2018. Artificial intelligence (AI) traces its roots to at least the 1950s, with its first application as an expert system in medicine in the early 1970s. Yet, the NIH Working Group on AI was not established until 2018 as well, with their first report issued in 2019. This is not to say that these topics have been neglected over the past half-century, but it begs the question of why have they only now come to the forefront of biomedicine? We have seen multiple AI booms and busts, each of which has caused massive hype, dream crushing failures, and notable advancements (some more flashy than others) along the way. This talk is not intended to be a history lesson, but it will provide some context for how we got to where we are and what this says about where biomedical research and healthcare seems to be heading. I will further provide insight into how various innovations in computation, policy, and industry have pushed the field forward and where recently established programs to expand AI activities, such as AIM-AHEAD and Bridge2AI, may push the biomedical research community over the next decade. To ground this presentation, I will provide examples of how AI and data science more generally have driven activities at the All of Us Research Program and the Vanderbilt Health Data Science Center.

Short Bio: Bradley Malin is the Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Biomedical Informatics at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and is the Accenture Professor of Biomedical Informatics, Biostatistics, and Computer Science at Vanderbilt University. He founded and co-directs the Vanderbilt Health Data Science Center, as well as the Center for Genetic Privacy and Identity in Community Settings (GetPreCiSe), the latter of which is an NIH Center of Excellence in Ethical, Legal, and Social Implications Research. Since 2007, he has chaired the Committee on Access, Privacy, and Security (CAPS) for the NIH-sponsored All of Us Research Program and, in 2021, he became one of the founding PIs of the NIH Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning Consortium to Advance Health Equity and Researcher Diversity (AIM-AHEAD). He serves on various governmental advisory bodies, including the Board of Scientific Counselors of the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Medicine (CDC). He was honored as a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) and is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine (NAM), the American College of Medical Informatics (ACMI), the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE), and the International Academy of Health Sciences Informatics (IAHSI) . He received a B.S. in Biological Sciences, M.S. in Machine Learning, M.Phil. in Public Policy and Management, and Ph.D. in Computer Science, all from Carnegie Mellon University.
Detroit-based artist, musician, and educator Mother Cyborg (Diana J. Nucera) debuts a series of quilts that references our relationship to digital technologies, data-mining and security in the age of the Internet. Using bright colors, geometric shapes and patterns, Crafting our Digital Legacy opens up analogue and tactile spaces that invite audiences to reflect upon our collective relationship with internet technologies, identity, legacy, and the future. Mother Cyborg draws from over 15 years experience as a community organizer in Detroit, MI where individuals gained access and agency to (re-)build their neighborhoods, and run their own Internet service providers. In this exhibition, Nucera expands her artist self through fiber works where she addresses critical issues of surveillance, data collection, the redaction of love to likes, and the complexity of identity within it all.
Mother Cyborg states, “This work aims to return a sense of wonder and magic to all of us, and rekindle the awe we may have first felt when using a geolocating star map, or being able to video call a person across borders. Crafting our Digital Legacy looks at the way in which art can unpack how living at the whim of invisible wifi connections, engaging ‘power cycling’ (turning on and off) computers and phones to ‘fix’ them, modern experiences of technology run the gamut from resigned faith to proselytizing zealotry. In our weariness of the state of technology, we fail to notice that the ‘same’ data, taken from all of us, has the power to rewrite and mutate the prior century’s worst inequalities into a blueprint for the future. These psychedelic quilts mesmerize while spotlighting surveillance tactics embedded within society bringing into focus the information and questions we should be asking of the future.”
Curated by Srimoyee Mitra.
Abstract:

Thousands of exoplanets have been discovered to date. Each exoplanet detection method is sensitive to specific regimes, leaving many gaps in exoplanet parameter space. In this thesis, we exploit the unique capabilities of long baseline interferometry to fill two gaps in exoplanet parameter space: 1) the detection of new planets around stars more massive than the Sun (Project ARMADA), and 2) the characterization of known planets that are extremely close to their host star (Project PRIME).

Most detection methods have focused on finding planets around solar-type and lower mass stars. More massive stars are not well-probed for planets. We developed a method to search for planets around such stars with Project ARMADA. Given that a star is part of a binary system, we can use interferometry to measure the position of one star relative to the other down to a precision of 10 micro-arcseconds. This allows us to detect the ``wobble" motion from previously unseen companions in the system. We first demonstrate the power of interferometry for studying binary stars with orbits, masses, and evolutionary state of A-type binaries alp Del and del Del. For del Del, we find that our astrometry allows us to probe for planets down to 2 MJup at 1 au. We then introduce our observations and wavelength calibration schemes for Project ARMADA, which is a long term monitoring effort with MIRC-X/CHARA and GRAVITY/VLTI to search for companions orbiting individual components of sub-arcsecond binaries. We present 15 detections of new stellar mass companions, with median precision levels often at the 20-50 micro-arcsecond level. We also detect two candidate brown dwarfs around A-type binaries HD6456 and HD82446. If confirmed, these objects would be unique since they both have short orbital periods and hence fall into the ``brown dwarf desert" where such objects are rare. For ARMADA binaries without detections, we compute non-detection limits and show that we are probing down to the substellar mass regime.

Project PRIME uses interferometry to characterize known close-in exoplanets. Single dish telescopes cannot see planets within the diffraction limit of the telescope, which is at the 100 milli-arcsecond level. Long baseline interferometry can be used to directly detect planets down to a few milli-arcseconds from their host star, if the high contrast can be demonstrated. We use the H-band MIRC-X instrument at the CHARA array to observe the non-transiting hot Jupiter planet Ups And b. We developed a self-calibration routine and observing setup to achieve the precision closure phases necessary for such a detection. In September 2019, we achieved a promising tentative detection of the planet at a contrast level of 2.2e-4. Remarkably, we confirm the detection in an independent MIRC-X follow-up run in 2021 October. However, we do not see the planet in our 2021 October K-band MYSTIC data. We compute updated model spectra for Ups And b, and confirm that the K-band data is expected to have more favorable contrast than in H-band. By injecting simulated planets at the expected location from the MIRC-X detection, we show that we should have recovered the planet down to a contrast level of 2e-4 in K-band. We are at the level of being able to directly detect close-in hot Jupiter planets. This will be a promising technique in the era of Gaia, when many close-in high contrast systems will need interferometric follow-up.
“One thing that is very clear to me is that my life and my work are very intertwined. For me the creation of my art, be it painting, drawing or printmaking, integrates my life experiences, my beliefs and my heritage. I hope that my viewers will also bring their own lenses created by their identity, their family history and their experiences.”
- Ruth Weisberg
Ruth Weisberg: Of Memory, Time & Place brings together over 25 works that span six decades of the artist’s practice as a painter and printmaker. It features iconic works from Weisberg’s artistic career - Waterborne (1973), A Year Passes (1985) and Questioning Veronese (2011) - where she explored the interconnectedness and continuity of successive generations. Anchored in themes of personal and familial memory; ancestral knowledge embedded in her Jewish heritage, and admiration for Western art history, her unframed canvases, and works on paper create liminal spaces that collapse the time and space, where family, friends from the present and past share space with great painters and Holocaust survivors and those who perished. The Shtetl, A Journey and Memorial, a limited- edition artist book that she wrote and illustrated comprising 9 intaglio prints in 1971, lies at the heart of the exhibition. In it she paid homage to the small Jewish towns in Poland (where her ancestors are from) before the Holocaust. This significant work was a touchstone for her artistic and professional career as it propelled her move from Michigan to Los Angeles in 1969.

Born and raised in Chicago, Weisberg moved to Ann Arbor to pursue her higher studies, she completed her B.Ed (1964), after spending three years in Perugia, Italy where she earned a Laurea di Belle Arti in 1962, and MFA (1965). Since her arrival in Los Angeles, Weisberg has been a formidable influence and mentor to decades of artists as an artist, Professor of Fine Arts and former Dean at the University of Southern California Roski School of Art and Design. Weisberg was the Director of the USC Initiative for Israeli Arts and Humanities, and the founder of the Jewish Artists Initiative of Southern California. Her first major survey in Los Angeles was in 1979 at the Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery. She and Judy Chicago were the first two artists exhibited at The Women’s Building, Los Angeles. Their solo exhibitions inaugurated that venue. Weisberg has had more than 80 solo exhibitions and nearly 200 group exhibitions internationally, including a major exhibition at the Norton Simon Museum, Pasadena and a retrospective, at the Skirball Museum, Los Angeles as well as a solo exhibition at the Huntington in San Marino. She is the recipient of many prestigious awards, some notable ones are the Printmaker Emeritus Award from the Southern Graphic Council International in 2015 and the Foundation for Jewish Culture’s 50th Anniversary Cultural Achievement Award in 2011. She has been the recipient of the Art Leadership Award, National Council of Art Administrators and the Women’s Caucus for Art Lifetime Achievement Award, 2009. Ruth Weisberg is represented by Jack Rutberg Fine Arts, Los Angeles.

Curated by Srimoyee Mitra.
COMMITTEE:
Ruetsche, Laura (co-chair)
Belot, Gordon (co-chair)
Baker, David
Elvang, Henriette (cognate, Physics)

ABSTRACT:
Scientists and mathematicians routinely make progress by reformulating their problem-solving plans. Whereas many philosophers focus on competing theories, methodologies, or foundations, I focus on what I call "compatible formulations." In these cases, different problem-solving plans peacefully coexist, mutually illuminating their subject matter. My dissertation defends an account of the nature and value of compatible formulations. I argue that reformulations often provide a kind of objective, non-practical, epistemic value, which I call "intellectual significance." Meeting the constitutive aims of science and mathematics requires reformulating.

Of course, not all reformulations are intellectually significant: some are trivial notational variants. To distinguish trivial from significant reformulations, I consider four different accounts of the value of reformulating, based on instrumental, intellectual, explanatory, and metaphysical value. According to what I call "conceptualism," reformulations are significant when they provide an epistemically distinct plan for solving problems. The intellectual value of reformulating does not require corresponding explanatory or metaphysical differences, and it goes beyond practical or instrumental value. To avoid more weighty commitments, I provide expressivist accounts of (i) what it means for one formulation to provide better understanding than another and (ii) what it means for one formulation to be more fundamental. Finally, I analyze what it means for a formulation to make a property manifest or perspicuous, e.g. by "wearing it on the sleeves."
The modern renaissance of folk music began when John Gorka won the Kerrville Folk Festival's New Folk award in 1984, and it grew to maturity when he released his debut album, "I Know," three years later. Here was a singer-songwriter with a striking baritone voice that made you feel like you'd been hearing it all your life, with the songwriting chops to take on and see into nearly every type of song—from personal pieces about love and sadness, to bemused observations about daily life, political thinking-aloud, and sheer unmitigated whimsy. Almost four decades later, John still calls himself an aspiring folksinger, and his music has just kept getting deeper and better over his more than 15 critically acclaimed albums. John isn't on the road as much as he used to be, so don't miss this chance to catch a folk classic.
---
Proof of COVID vaccination required for entry.
