However, for much of our history, spaceflight has made limited use of autonomy and onboard computational capability. This has changed in the past few years, particularly at more distant locations or in applications where the number of collaborative sensors is large. This seminar will review the systems trade between ground-in-the-loop and autonomous operations from a risk perspective, discuss recent advances in space exploration enabled by autonomy, and highlight the new class of spaceflight missions possible in the coming decade. Recent examples from the speaker\u2019s experience working with the Mars Perseverance, Ingenuity, and DART project teams will be referenced.\r\n\r\nSpeaker Bio:\r\nDr. Robert D. Braun has more than 35 years experience as a space systems engineer, technologist, and organizational leader. He has contributed to the formulation, development, and operation of multiple space flight missions and is a recognized authority in hypersonics technology and the development of and entry, descent and landing systems. Dr. Braun presently serves on the executive leadership team of the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory. He previously served as Director for Planetary Science at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Colorado Boulder, a faculty member of the Georgia Institute of Technology, and on the technical staff of the NASA Langley Research Center. In 2010-2011, Dr. Braun served as the first NASA Chief Technologist in more than a decade with responsibility for development of the Agency\u2019s technology and innovation policies and programs. He created and led the initial implementation of a spectrum of NASA technology programs designed to mature the capabilities required for our nation\u2019s future in space. As greenhouse gases increase and the Earth\u2019s surface warms, projecting when the Arctic Ocean may become ice-free, and the resulting impacts is of broad interest to those living in the Arctic and beyond. Numerical coupled models are the main tool for making such future projections. Yet, projecting sea ice loss is hard with these tools because it is challenging to constrain physical process uncertainty, unpredictable climate variability, and differences in climate drivers. In this talk, I will present an overview of research over last decade analyzing processes controlling the transition to a seasonally ice-free Arctic Ocean in a warming world. The impact of this has been profound\u2013 computing is pervasive and portable and communication is instant and global. My research aims to harness this same engineering approach to solve high impact problems in medical diagnostics. To accomplish this goal my lab develops hybrid microchips, where microfluidics are built directly on top of semiconductor chips. In this talk I will focus on recent work at Penn on 'digital asays.' Digital assays \u2014 in which ultra-sensitive molecular measurements are made by performing millions of parallel experiments in picoliter droplets \u2014 have generated enormous enthusiasm due to their single molecule resolution. These assays have incredible untapped potential for disease diagnostics but are currently confined to laboratory settings due to the instrumentation necessary to generate, control, and measure tens of millions of droplets. To overcome this challenge, we are developing a hybrid microelectronic \/ microfluidic chip to \u2018unlock\u2019 droplet-based assays for mobile use. Our microDroplet Fluorescence Detector (\u00b5DFD) takes inspiration from cellular networks, in which phones are identified by their carrier frequency and not their particular location. In collaboration with physicians at The Abramson Cancer Center, we are demonstrating the power of this approach by developing a multiplexed exosome-based diagnostic for the early detection of pancreatic cancer.\r\n\r\nBio: The Issadore lab combines microelectronics, microfluidics, nanomaterials, and machine learning to solve big problems in healthcare. We create miniaturized platforms for the diagnosis of disease, we develop new platforms to manufacture micro and nanomaterials, and we dip our toes into an assortment of other areas where we can leverage our engineering training to improve healthcare. In addition to its inherent interest, such information is crucial for studying problems involving the interaction of waves with a spatially localized object; indeed, our motivation for developing this method comes from the Strong Cosmic Censorship Conjecture.
