Rather than imagining it as a singular, coherent object, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity, difference, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts, \u201cfeminism\u201d in Japan can invoke sharply different associations, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families, workplaces, schools, political institutions, and laws, among many other contexts. Many \u00ad\u2013 but certainly not all \u2013 feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects, working toward recognition, repair, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\r\n\r\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. Created by nine contemporary artists in Japan and the United States, the portraits and accompanying texts challenge simplistic understandings of \"feminism\" while also drawing attention to a diversity of experiences, needs, and activism within Japan. The work consists of a series of collages and a collection of Polaroids that are accompanied by animations and video clips seen solely through the use of an augmented reality application (Virtual Mutations).\r\n\r\nThe scenarios presented in the static images act as literal stages for animated narratives. What once was a captured single moment echoes into motion, creating an additional layer as to what will come thereafter. A dialogue between the past and the present is established and the app itself acts as a mediator between these tenses, allowing the observer to have a glimpse of the afterthought, that range from digital collages to Polaroid instant film.\r\n\r\nAbout the Artist\r\nCamila Magrane is a multimedia artist originally from Caracas, Venezuela. Having a father from the U.S. and a mother from Venezuela, she grew up alternating between both countries. Being fully exposed to two different cultures gave her a greater understanding of what it means to have various perspectives. After graduating from film school in Caracas, she moved to San Francisco where she freelanced as an editor and camera operator. After discovering a passion for video games and interactive media, Magrane obtained a BS in computer science with a concentration in game development. This eventually led her to working in the game industry as a cinematic artist.\r\n\r\nMagrane has been pursuing a professional career as a multimedia artist since 2017, working within a variety of mediums, from photography and collage to animation and virtual\/augmented reality (AR). She has been most noted for the creation of her AR image-based work where she\u2019s established a postmodern aesthetic by combining traditional darkroom techniques with the use of digital tools.\r\n\r\nPrior to her career in the arts, Magrane worked as a community organizer and teacher, creating and managing a curriculum for teaching 3rd-6th graders coding skills in public schools in Caracas, Venezuela. She continues to be active in community work by giving talks and workshops revolving around the topics of art, technology, and the use of AR as a creative medium.\r\n\r\nCamila Magrane has exhibited work internationally in numerous exhibitions, event spaces, fairs, and festivals. Under almost 23 years of Putin's rule of Russia, the country's political system has devolved into a repressive, personalistic and internationally aggressive form of authoritarianism. The implications for Europe and global democracy are decidedly negative, as we are seeing in Ukraine currently. But the implications are increasingly problematic also for Putin\u2019s regime. The deepening of autocracy in Russia (making it worse or more repressive) is a result of more than a decade of declining regime performance. The war in Ukraine has now exploded the already ailing myth of competency that Putin has perpetuated since the early 2000\u2019s and has made his regime vulnerable to elite and social pressure. Professor Stoner will use the Russian case to examine why autocracies sometimes get worse over time, and what this process tells us about regime resilience. \r\n\r\nKathryn Stoner is the deputy director at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies at Stanford University and a senior fellow at the Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law, and the Center on International Security and Cooperation at FSI. She teaches in the Department of Political Science at Stanford, and in the Program on International Relations, as well as in the Ford Dorsey Master's in International Policy Program. Prior to her appointment at Stanford, she was on the faculty at Princeton University for nine years, jointly appointed to the Department of Politics and the Woodrow Wilson School for International and Public Affairs. At Princeton she received the Ralph O. Glendinning Preceptorship awarded to outstanding junior faculty. She also served as a visiting associate professor of political science at Columbia University, and an assistant professor of political science at McGill University. She has held fellowships at Harvard University as well as the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington, DC.\r\n \r\nIn addition to many articles and book chapters on contemporary Russia, she is the author or co-editor of five books: *Transitions to Democracy: A Comparative Perspective*, written and edited with Michael A. McFaul (Johns Hopkins 2013); *Autocracy and Democracy in the Post-Communist World*, co-edited with Valerie Bunce and Michael A. McFaul (Cambridge, 2010); *Resisting the State: Reform and Retrenchment in Post-Soviet Russia* (Cambridge, 2006); *After the Collapse of Communism: Comparative Lessons of Transitions*, coedited with Michael A. McFaul (Cambridge, 2004); and *Local Heroes: The Political Economy of Russian Regional Governance* (Princeton, 1997).
