He obtained a B.Sc. in Chemistry from University of British Columbia Okanagan and there studied the aroma profile of Chardonnay wines. Following PhD training in total synthesis with Prof. Jim Gleason at McGill University, Tim was a FQRNT Postdoctoral Fellow with Tristan Lambert at Columbia University. From 2009\u20132018, Tim worked with the Medicinal Chemistry team at Merck Sharp & Dohme in Rahway and Boston. In 2018, Dr. Cernak joined the Department of Medicinal Chemistry at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor as an Assistant Professor. The Cernak Lab is exploring an interface of chemical synthesis and data science. Tim is a co-Founder of Entos, Inc.\r\n\r\n---\r\n\"Accelerating and improving climate models with hybrid AI approaches\" - \r\nTapio Schneider, Theodore Y. Wu Professor of Environmental Science And Engineering, California Institute of Technology; Senior Research Scientist, Jet Propulsion Laboratory. \r\n\r\nHis work has elucidated how rainfall extremes change with climate, how changes in cloud cover can destabilize the climate system, and how winds and\u00a0 weather on planetary bodies such as Jupiter and Titan come about. Williams serves as the inaugural associate dean for inclusive excellence and chief diversity officer, advancing the College\u2019s diversity and inclusion initiatives and supporting a climate of equity and belonging across our community. Williams is a member of the academic faculty in the H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISyE), where he is a senior lecturer and director of ISyE\u2019s Center for Academics, Success, and Equity, which he founded in 2020. He also speaks nationally on higher education and diversity in academia.\r\n\r\nWilliams earned a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering from Georgia Tech in 2002 and then a master\u2019s and Ph.D. in industrial and operations engineering from the University of Michigan. He returned to Georgia Tech as a postdoctoral fellow in the Center for Teaching and Learning and a part-time lecturer in ISyE in 2010. This seminar will be in-person and livestreaming on Zoom (link this page).\r\n\r\nAbstract:\r\nIn this talk I will summarise collaborative efforts from my research group to unveil the patterns and processes underlying the outstanding biodiversity found today in the world\u2019s tropical regions, with a focus on the American tropics and additional examples from Africa and Madagascar. By comparing the current distribution and evolutionary history of multiple organism groups, we have been able to identify common effects of historical events (such as mountain uplift, climate change and river shifts) on biodiversity. To our aid we use molecular and spatial information from field collected specimens and natural history collections, develop new computational tools and review fossil evidence.
