Hodge theory, as developed by Deligne and Griffiths, is one of the main tools for analysing the geometry and arithmetic of complex algebraic varieties, that is, solution sets of algebraic equations over the complex numbers. It associates to any complex algebraic variety an apparently simple linear algebra gadget: a finite dimensional vector space over the rationals, whose complexification is naturally endowed with two filtrations. Hodge theory occupies a central position in mathematics through its relations to differential geometry, algebraic geometry, differential equations and number theory.

It is an essential fact that at heart, Hodge theory is not algebraic but rather the transcendental comparison of two algebraic structures. On the other hand, some of the deepest conjectures in mathematics (the Hodge conjecture and the Grothendieck period conjecture) suggest that this transcendence is severely constrained. In these lectures, we survey the recent advances bounding this transcendence, mainly due to the introduction of tame geometry as a natural framework for Hodge theory.
Crucial to sustainable energy future is the ability to manipulate important chemical reactions for the production and conversion of clean hydrogen (H2) fuel and renewable carbon-based chemicals through the development of advanced catalysts. Well-defined nanocrystals with atomically precise surfaces and interfaces allow us to bridge the knowledge gap between conventional single-crystal bulk materials and powder catalysts to achieve a new and in-depth understanding of structure-catalytic property relationships. In this talk, I will highlight how nanocrystal catalyst surfaces and interfaces can be synthetically tuned with atomic precision for the improved performance in the oxygen-mediated energy conversion reactions: the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) for fuel cells and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) for water electrolyzer. The first nanocrystal system I will discuss is the M-Pt (M=non-precious metals) core-shell nanocrystals within which desirable/undesirable interfaces between non-precious metal M core and precious metal Pt shell were identified by theoretical calculations and were experimentally balanced through wet-chemical synthesis. The optimized core-shell nanocrystals exhibited favorable interfacial interaction through properly coupled electronic and strain effects, leading to an enhanced electrocatalytic efficiency towards the ORR. In the second system, we elucidated and modulated the interaction of single-site Co, Fe, Ni catalytic centers and inorganic coordination environments in the surface of doped metal oxide nanocrystals for the OER. The seamless integration of controlled synthesis of nanocrystals, operando structural/catalytic characterization, and advanced theoretical calculation for oxygen electrocatalyst development will be discussed, which will also be extended to other electrocatalytic (e.g., CO2 reduction and biomass-derived molecule upgrading) and thermocatalytic processes (e.g., CO2 hydrogenation).

Sen Zhang (University of Virginia)
Topic: *Understanding thermomechanical behavior of vitrimers using molecular dynamics simulations*

Vitrimers are a special class of polymers that undergo dynamic cross-linking under thermal stimuli. Their ability to exchange covalent bonds can be harnessed to mitigate damage in a composite or to achieve recyclable composites. This work addresses the primary challenge of modeling dynamic cross-linking reactions in vitrimers during thermomechanical loading. Dynamic bond exchange reaction probability change during heating and its effect on dilatometric and mechanical response are simulated in large scale molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Healing of damage under thermal cycling is computed with mechanical properties predicted before and after self–healing.

Subsequently, the model is used to simulate the creep response of the vitrimer. The results show that the vitrimers demonstrate a secondary creep response on contrary to pure epoxy. The MD simulations are able to probe the interplay between chemical reactions and the loading that results in the healing of the vitrimer under creep. The important feature that explains the difference between epoxies and vitrimers is the orientation of the crosslink bonds with respect to the loading direction. Furthermore, it is found that the free volume that arises from tensile loads is reduced in vitrimers through dynamic bond rearrangement. The bond orientation, however, is preferentially chosen to be normal to the loading axis which ends up decreasing the stiffness along the loading axis, leading to higher strain as compared to epoxies. Over longer timescales, the increased strain leads to faster damage localization in tertiary creep where the largest void grows to a critical volume beyond which healing is no longer possible. Thus, chemistry changes or additives that can prevent the initial realignment of dynamic bonds can be an effective strategy to mitigate creep in vitrimers.
Please register for this Zoom seminar at http://myumi.ch/Nm35W

When the U-M Center for Japanese Studies was established, Naomi Fukuda, a pre-war student at University of Michigan, was not able to become the first Japanese studies librarian in an ironic twist of fate. In 1970, however, she finally got the position thanks to her extensive experience and rich expertise. This talk will go over parts of her life and career trajectory in both Japan and the United States.

Izumi Koide obtained a Master of Library Science degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1980. In that same year, she started working for the International House of Japan as the librarian and in 2001 became Program Director. In 2003, she moved to the Shibusawa Eiichi Memorial Foundation and worked as Director of the Resource Center for the History of Entrepreneurship until her retirement in 2015. She earned her M.A. in 2008, her Ph.D. in 2020 from the University of Tokyo, and published her dissertation, *Nichibei Koryu-shi no Naka no Fukuda Naomi: “Gaikoku Kenkyu” to Raiburarian* (*Naomi Fukuda and the History of Japan-U.S. Exchange: “Foreign Area Studies” and the Librarian*), via Bensei Shuppan in 2022. Her major interest is in information accessibility and availability of resources in international studies.

This lecture is made possible with the generous support of the U.S. Department of Education Title VI grant.

If there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you, please contact us. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.",

We look forward to a great conversation with Dr. Williams. All majors are welcome.

The Black Industrial Engineers (BIndx, pronounced BIND-ex) group is composed of IOE students and faculty who come together informally for meaningful conversations and fellowship to promote learning, mentoring, and networking. The BIndx program was initiated to promote a learning space where students feel comfortable engaging with faculty. BIndx meetings occur as informal monthly discussions to help form relationships between faculty and minoritized students. BIndx hosts a diverse group of guest speakers throughout the semester with a specific focus to facilitate conversations, build connections, and empower self-reflection.
Lebanese artist Tania El Khoury examines the universal, never-ending story of migration through a family diary of the borders, and the recognition that the cruelest of borders are invisible to the eye and present in everyday life.
Cultural Exchange Rate is an interactive live art project in which El Khoury shares her family memoirs of life in border villages between Lebanon and Syria. El Khoury collects recorded interviews with her late grandmother, the discovery of lost relatives in México City, and the family’s attempt to secure dual citizenship through war survival, valueless currency collection, and a river that disregards both colonial and national borders. The audience is invited to immerse their heads into one family’s secret boxes to explore sounds, images, and textures that trace more than a century of border crossings.
Tania El Khoury is a live artist whose work focuses on audience interactivity and its political potential. She creates installations and performances in which the audience is a witness and an active collaborator. Tania’s work has been translated to multiple languages and shown in 32 countries across 6 continents in spaces ranging from museums to cable cars. She is the recipient of a Soros Art Fellowship, the Bessies Outstanding Production Award, the International Live Art Prize, the Total Theatre Innovation Award, and the Arches Brick Award.
El Khoury is the director of the OSUN Center for Human Rights & the Arts at Bard College in New York. She holds a PhD from Royal Holloway, University of London. She is associated with Forest Fringe collective of artists in the UK and is a co-founder of Dictaphone Group in Lebanon, a research and live art collective aiming at questioning our relationship to the city and its public spaces. Tania El Khoury’s previous work, As Far As My Fingertips Take Me was part of No Safety Net 2.0 in early 2020.
This event will be an interview conducted by Tom Sellar, a writer, editor, dramaturg and curator, editor of Yale’s international journal Theater, and professor in the Practice of Dramaturgy and Dramatic Criticism at Yale. Sellar’s arts writing and criticism has appeared in national publications including Artforum, BOMB, the New York Times, the Guardian, 4Columns, TheatreForum, and American Theatre. He has served as dramaturg for more than 25 productions at theaters including the Joseph Papp Public Theater/New York Shakespeare Festival, Center Stage (Baltimore), PS 122, Yale Repertory Theatre, Yale School of Drama, and the Ontological-Hysteric Theater, among others. Sellar co-edited “Where No Wall Remains,” a special edition of Theater on borders and performance, with Tania El Khoury in 2021.",
