The University of Michigan welcomes José María Figueres as this year’s Wege Lecture Series* speaker.

In 1994 he was elected President of Costa Rica and was the nation’s youngest elected president of the 20th century. After he left the presidency of Costa Rica in 1998, Figueres has been involved in global issues such as climate change, sustainable development, and technology. In 2000, Figueres joined the World Economic Forum in Switzerland, and later he worked with Concordia 21 in Madrid. Since 2010, he has been Chairman of the Carbon War Room, an independent non-profit organization focused on the global transition to a low-carbon economy. And in 2012, he was appointed as the new President of the Carbon War Room.

*The Center for Sustainable Systems at the School of Natural Resources and Environment annually invites an internationally recognized leader to deliver the Peter M. Wege Lecture on Sustainability. It addresses important sustainability challenges facing society such as energy security, global climate change, ecosystem degradation and sustainable development strategies - with a focus on improving the systems for meeting human needs in developed and developing countries.
Frequently developed as expansive, multi-media projects, Los Angeles artist Sandow Birk's works deal with contemporary life. With an emphasis on social issues, his work often includes themes of inner city violence, graffiti, political issues, travel, war, and prisons, as well as surfing and skateboarding. He has been the recipient of numerous grants and awards including, an NEA International Travel Grant to Mexico City, a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Fulbright Fellowship, a Getty Fellowship, and a City of Los Angeles (COLA) Fellowship. He has been an artist in residence at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC, and at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris.
Birk will discuss his latest epic project: the creation of a hand-transcribed and illuminated manuscript of the Holy Qur'an, in English. This nine-year project seeks to make the message of the Qur'an, unknown to most Americans, less exotic and ominous and more accessible by contrasting the text with scenes of every day life in contemporary United States.
The University of Michigan's Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning presents...the Charles and Ray Eames Lecture: OUALALOU + CHOI.

OUALALOU+CHOI is an architecture firm based in Paris and Casablanca. Questioning the limited scope of the architect’s traditional role, OUALALOU+CHOI has developed its practice upon the theory that architectural strategies should be integrated into a project long before and after the conventional intervention of architects. Working closely with clients during site determination, programming, and the economic development of the project, the office engages in the definition of the architectural project from its very inception. OUALALOU+CHOI believes that playing an integral role in the non-architectural aspects of a project results in a stronger design solution.

OUALALOU+CHOI has worked on a vast range of programs and scales, encompassing museums, luxury hotels and resorts, social housing, sports complexes, and master plans for both existing and new cities. The office has won numerous awards, including the 2012 Young Arab Architects competition, WA Awards and the EMAP Award for emerging architecture. OUALALOU+CHOI has also been named finalist for the 2014 AFEX award, for an outstanding project undertaken by a French architect outside France. OUALALOU+CHOI’s work has been published internationally and exhibited in Paris, Casablanca, London and Copenhagen.

The Charles and Ray Eames lecture series celebrates the work of one the world's most outstanding design partnerships. In their inventiveness, enlightened patronage, and serious play of collaborative work, Charles and Ray Eames, together with Herman Miller, Inc., transformed the landscape of design, not only in America, but across the world. From their earliest work together, Charles and Ray Eames and Herman Miller explored the properties of materials, economy, and the potential of production, in order to make good design more widely accessible. Taubman College's Charles and Ray Eames lecture series continues each year to highlight a partnership of architects or designers, and it is special in the fact that both partners come and lecture together.

About University of Michigan Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning:

The Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Michigan is a leader in interdisciplinary education and research with a focus on creating a more beautiful, inclusive and better built environment. The college and its alumni are committed to pushing the boundaries of architectural practice, advancing global engagement, and significantly enhancing diversity in the profession. The college offers the following degrees: Bachelor of Science in Architecture, Master of Architecture (currently ranked #6 nationally; ranked #1 in 2010 by Design Intelligence Report), Master of Science in Architecture, Master of Urban Planning, Master of Urban Design, and PhD programs.
SOLD OUT

Lucinda Williams was named America's best songwriter by Time, and though plenty of people would disagree, few would dismiss the assertion out of hand. Beginning with a couple of albums of straight Texas blues in the late 1970s, Lucinda has built an unparalleled catalogue of great songs over a career now in its fourth decade. She's done searing rock confessionals, put herself out there with introspective folk to match the best of them, hit the common denominator of commercial country with "Passionate Kisses" and some terrific storytelling songs, delved into R&B and gospel, made straight blues that bears comparison with Janis Joplin—and she was really Americana before there was such a category. Her music has been called "Gothic," and "darkly damaged," but there's a cathartic confessional quality to it that in the end is deeply positive and inspiring. Lucinda comes to Michigan with an acclaimed new release, "The Ghosts of Highway 20," of which she says, "It is literally a map of my life in a lot of ways. We were driving between shows and between cities, and I kept seeing things that brought me back to times and places in my past. Like when we played in Macon, Georgia, a place I lived when I was five or six years old, I got out of the bus and I was transported back to when I saw this street singer, Blind Pearly Brown. It was like nothing had changed. All these things started percolating in my brain, and the songs just came.” Delta blues trio Buick 6 is special guest.",
