Rather than imagining it as a singular, coherent object, this exhibit seeks to introduce the diversity, difference, and complexity inherent in feminist activism in Japan. As in other cultural contexts, \u201cfeminism\u201d in Japan can invoke sharply different associations, from office workers trying to reshape taken-for-granted structures of power and authority, to mothers advocating for safer school lunches after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disasters, and queer couples seeking legal recognition for the families they have created. Mainstream feminist activism in Japan has focused on advocating for change in families, workplaces, schools, political institutions, and laws, among many other contexts. Many \u00ad\u2013 but certainly not all \u2013 feminist activists in Japan are also responding to the lasting legacies of Japanese colonial projects, working toward recognition, repair, and meaningful reparations for racial and gender-based violence that continue to impact communities disproportionately.\r\n\r\nThis exhibit features original portraits of feminists who have shaped the landscape of women's and gender rights in Japan and beyond. Created by nine contemporary artists in Japan and the United States, the portraits and accompanying texts challenge simplistic understandings of \"feminism\" while also drawing attention to a diversity of experiences, needs, and activism within Japan. This exhibit also spotlights the history of Japanese studies at the University of Michigan in conjunction with the Center for Japanese Studies' 75th anniversary celebration. \r\n\r\n\u201cPortraits of Feminism in Japan\u201d is open for viewing M-F 9am-4pm or by appointment. The prison system regulates every part of an inmate's identity. Instead of using their name, they are given an ID number. Visiting room photos and mug shots are tightly regulated. Personal info is recorded: height, weight, etc. In the process, their humanity is denied.\r\n\r\nThis exhibit at the Detroit Historical Museum reveals the faces and stories of those in prison. It lifts up the voices of those who have been silenced by the criminal legal system. The Humanize the Numbers project gives them a freedom not normally allowed in prison. They share their stories with the world outside. This talk analyzes methodologies employed in Japanese Yaoi\/BL novels and explores their potential as post-binary feminism.\r\n \r\n Kazuko Suzuki is an Associate Professor of Sociology at Texas A&M University and the author of the award-winning book, *Divided Fates: The State, Race, and Korean Immigrants\u2019 Adaptation in Japan and the United States*, which compares adaptation patterns of three Korean diasporic groups in Japan and the United States. She also co-edited a book, *Reconsidering Race: Social Science Perspectives on Racial Categories in the Age of Genomics*. Her research interests include modes of incorporation and immigrant adaptation from an international comparative perspective; historical and regional analysis of \u201crace\u201d beyond the Western paradigm, as well as global diffusion of \u201crace\u201d and racisms; and gender and sexuality in Japanese popular culture media, in particular Yaoi\/BL.
