        "description":"Yang Yu \r\nU-M Physics\r\n\r\nMagnetic Phases of the Anisotropic Triangular Lattice Hubbard Model\r\n\r\nThe Hubbard model on an anisotropic triangular lattice in two dimensions, a fundamental model for frustrated electron physics, displays a wide variety of phases and phase transitions. This work investigates the model using the ladder dual fermion approximation which captures local correlations non-perturbatively but approximates non-local correlations. We find metallic, one-dimensional antiferromagnetic, non-collinear antiferromagnetic, square-lattice antiferromagnetic, and spiral phases but no evidence of collinear antiferromagnetic order in different parts of the phase diagram. Analyzing the spin susceptibility in detail, we see both regions of agreement and of discrepancy with previous work. The case of Cs2CuCl4 is discussed in detail.\r\n\r\nReference:\r\nhttps:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/2211.09234. \r\n\r\n\r\nTorben Purz \r\nMONSTR Sense Technologies\r\n\r\nCoherent Imaging Spectroscopy of Transition Metal Dichalcogenides\r\n\r\nTransition Metal Dichalcogenides (TMDs) monolayers and heterostructures are a promising material platform for quantum information science, photovoltaics, and related device applications. In the past decade, much effort has been dedicated to explore the exciton physics in these materials, ranging from their strong light-matter coupling to charge transfer and coherent coupling. However, many demonstrations in TMDs can only be realized at specific spots on the sample, presenting a challenge to the scalability of these applications.\r\n\r\nIn this talk, I will demonstrate Multi-Dimensional Coherent Imaging Spectroscopy of TMDs and highlight the sensitivity of exciton spatial and temporal coherence toward strain while coherent exciton coupling and charge transfer in these samples remain mostly unaffected, strengthening the case for TMDs as next-generation material platform in quantum information science and beyond. In addition, I will demonstrate rapid nonlinear imaging spectroscopy of TMDs that assesses the quality of samples through measurement of their nonlinear response, exciton dephasing, exciton lifetimes, and exciton-coupling strength.  By comparison, I will show that extracting material parameters such as four-wave mixing intensity, dephasing times, excited state lifetimes, exciton-coupling strength, and distribution of dark\/localized states allows for a more accurate assessment of the quality of a sample than current prevalent techniques, including white light microscopy, linear micro-reflectance spectroscopy, and photo-luminescence.",

Yet how do animals, including ourselves, get around in this complex and uncertain world with an ease and agility we find hard to recreate in engineered systems? A particular frontier is centimeter scale locomotion, especially flapping flight. Flapping flight is considered a key evolutionary innovation that led to one of the most explosive radiation events where insects diversified to many forms and ecologies. Underlying these behaviors are compositions of immensely complex physiological subsystems (brains, muscles, bodies), yet what often emerges through evolutionary timescales and environmental interactions is a functional performance that can (sometimes) afford simple analysis on the scale of behavior. In this talk, I will use the agile flight of insects to show how an organismal physics approach can give insights into this emergent, functional simplicity. I will show how insects operate as resonant mechanical systems to power flight but do not necessarily operate at their resonant frequency because of consequences for control. We will explore how insects have evolved two different strategies for powering this resonant flight system using muscles that either provide periodic oscillatory forcing or use a stretch-responsive property to set up self-excited limit cycles. While these two strategies have been known for some time, we find that they can be unified in a single dynamic systems framework that shows how major evolutionary transitions reflect transitions in dynamics. We embody this framework in a dynamically scaled robophysical flapper, where kinematics emerge from mechanics and actuation. We can then test the broad parameter space for flapping flight. We find that these two dynamics regimes are separated by a classic entrainment boundary but also bridged by a region of parameter space enabling smooth transitions between the two flight modes. Finally, we realize this biophysical model in the first at-scale flapping robot that can achieve self-excited oscillations and transition between the two flight modes.\r\n\r\nBio\r\nSimon Sponberg is Dunn Family Associate Professor in the School of Physics and the School of Biological Sciences at the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech). He received his B.A. in physics and biology from Lewis &amp; Clark College and his Ph.D. in Integrative Biology from the University of California, Berkeley. Afterward, Simon conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Washington before joining the faculty at Georgia Tech. He and his group (the Agile Systems Lab) has been exploring how neurons precisely orchestrate motor activity at the millisecond scale, how the versatility of muscle arises from the physics of billions of organized tiny molecular motors, how agile flight is powered and controlled at the centimeter scale and how flowers blow in the wind (and what that does to the pollinators around them). His interdisciplinary approach has been supported by three NSF directorates, including a CAREER award in the physics of living systems. He now leads an Air Force Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative (MURI), bringing together neuroscientists and engineers from five universities to understand how the brains of organisms achieve fast, flexible perception and decision-making in complex sensory environments. He has been the recipient of a Young Investigator Award from the International Society for Neuroethology, a Klingenstein-Simons Fellowship in the Neurosciences, and a Hertz Fellow.",

This represented a paradigm shift in the overall understanding of disease transmission from droplets and surfaces (aka \u201cdroplet dogma\u201d) to aerosol or airborne transmission. It required a major concerted effort between engineers, scientists, members of the public, and enlightened members in the medical field.  \r\nThis presentation will discuss coordinated efforts by scientists and engineers largely through social media. Highlights will be given of all methods used to induce this change including letters to the White House, Editorials, publications in top journals including Science and The Lancet, meetings with CDC officials and Dr. Fauci, as well as testifying for OSHA and congressional hearings.  Finally, a discussion of the raised awareness and efforts now focusing on the need to clean indoor air will be discussed, including efforts being implemented in schools, homes, and businesses. A summary of lessons learned from these experiences and how they will benefit research going forward will be provided.",

Register at link below.\r\n\r\nABSTRACT:  We are a species of information foragers. Individually and collectively, we have evolved to scour our natural and social environments for useful information. Over the past twenty years, society has constructed an information pipeline, the so-called Internet 2.0, to satisfy and profit from our evolved desires for novel information and social connection. What happens when the scale of human communication is radically transformed in the span of a generation, and our mechanisms for creating collective understanding are upended? What happens when this entire process is not stewarded to promote the spread of accurate information, strengthen democracy, and advance human well-being\u2014but rather is to a first approximation engineered by machine learning algorithms to get people to click on advertisements?\r\n\r\nIn this talk, I\u2019ll look at what social media and information technology more generally are doing to society, consider how we ended up here, and explore some possible suggestions for what we can do about it.\r\n\r\nShort Bio\r\n\r\nCarl Bergstrom is a Professor of Biology at the University of Washington. Though trained in evolutionary biology and mathematical population genetics, he enjoys working across disciplines and integrating ideas across the span of the natural and social sciences.\r\n\r\nThe unifying theme running throughout his work is the concept of information. Within biology,  he studies how communication evolves and how the process of evolution encodes information in genomes. In the philosophy and sociology of science, he studies how norms and institutions influence scholars\u2019 research strategies and, in turn, our scientific understanding of the world. Within informatics, he studies how citations and other traces of scholarly activity can be used to better navigate the overwhelming volume of scholarly literature. Lately he has become concerned with the spread of disinformation on social networks, and is interested in figuring out what we can do about it.\r\n\r\n----\r\n\r\nDr. Bergstrom has published extensively on COVID, and misinformation (and COVID\u00a0misinformation!) in the New York Times, The Atlantic, Scientific American and innumerable scientific journals.         "description":"Berkovich spaces are analogues of complex manifolds when the complex numbers are replaced by a non-Archimedean field, that is, a field satifying the strong triangle inequality.\r\n\r\nI will discuss two instances where Berkovich spaces naturally appear within complex geometry. The first concerns the Yau--Tian--Donaldson conjecture, on the existence of K\u00e4hler--Einstein metrics on Fano manifolds. The second situation appears in the context of degenerations of Calabi--Yau manifolds, and features conjectures by Strominger--Yau--Zaslow, and Kontsevich--Soibelman.\r\n\r\nThis is based on joint work with R. Berman, S. Boucksom, J, Hultgren, E. Mazzon, and N. McCleerey.",
