In the first part of the talk, we study the flat band wavefunctions of chiral twisted bilayer graphene at higher magic angles. We show that at higher magic angles, the wavefunctions exhibit an increasing number of zeros, resembling quantum Hall wavefunctions at higher Landau levels. Zeros of the same chirality cluster near the center of the moire unit cell, causing an enhanced phase winding and circulating current. The wavefunctions at higher magic angles have signatures in scanning tunneling microscopy and orbital magnetization experiments. In the second half of the talk, we investigate the fate of the surface Dirac cone of a three-dimensional topological insulator subject to a superlattice potential. Using a combination of diagrammatic perturbation theory, lattice model simulations, and ab initio calculations, we report a dramatic renormalization of the surface Dirac cone velocity and the formation of gapless satellite Dirac cones. Metabolomic profiles are therefore sensitive to subtle perturbations\r\nobserved in early disease stages or disease progression, which may be difficult to detect at the\r\nproteome or transcriptome levels. Human diseases are multi-factorial in nature, and studying\r\nsmall parts of their associated molecular changes is generally insufficient for understanding the\r\nfull spectrum of disease phenotypes.\r\nThe metabolome is the total collection of biologically-active small molecules with molecular\r\nweights lower than about ~1.5 kDa in an organism. This includes endogenous molecules that\r\nare biosynthesized by metabolic networks in \u00e2\u0080\u009cprimary metabolism\u00e2\u0080\u009d, specialized \u00e2\u0080\u009csecondary\r\nmetabolite\u00e2\u0080\u009d signaling or defense molecules, molecules derived from diet or environmental\r\nexposures (the exposome), and molecules derived from the biosynthetic interactions with\r\nassociated microbes (the microbiome). Metabolomics can either be \u00e2\u0080\u009ctargeted\u00e2\u0080\u009d to a set of known\r\ncompounds, for example certain lipids, or \u00e2\u0080\u009cnon-targeted\u00e2\u0080\u009d, which attempts to detect and relatively\r\nquantify as many metabolites as possible.\r\nThe vast chemical diversity of the metabolome (lipids, sugars, amino acids, etc.), and its\r\nwide dynamic range (mM to fM) implies that no single analytical method can adequately profile\r\nall metabolites in one metabolomics experiment. Along these lines, the \u00e2\u0080\u009cfusion\u00e2\u0080\u009d of mass\r\nspectrometry (MS) and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) is emerging as one of\r\nthe most powerful avenues to increase metabolome coverage. Nested separations that work in\r\na time frame compatible with mass spectrometry, such as those performed by ion mobility, are\r\nalso playing a key analytical role in metabolomics as a way of increasing peak capacity, and\r\nidentifying metabolites through ion mobility collision cross section measurements. Further,\r\nlocalization of metabolites at the tissue level with imaging mass spectrometry experiments,\r\nallows linking their abundance with changes observed in biofluids. Currently, she is engaged in two major research projects. One explores the influence of religion on political attitudes and behavior in Muslim majority states with an emphasis on the relationship between religious regulation, religiosity, and political mobilization. The other focuses on the identifying the factors that affect the extent to which people are complying with social distancing policies to combat the COVID-19 pandemic and the impact that these policies are having on individuals and communities around the world.\r\n\r\nNurseit Niyazbekov is an Assistant Professor in the Department of International Relations at KIMEP University, Kazakhstan. He holds a PhD in politics and MSc in sociology from the University of Oxford. He has taught at other universities in Kazakhstan and has conducted research at international and non-governmental organizations. He often consults international think tanks and researchers on issues related to political risks, democratization, social welfare, and protests in Kazakhstan. His research interests revolve around post-communist transitions, Central Asian politics, social movements, social capital, and protest mobilization.\r\n\r\nEdward Schatz is Professor of Political Science at the University of Toronto. He recently published *Slow Anti-Americanism: Social Movements and Symbolic Politics in Central Asia* with Stanford University Press. His previous books include *Paradox of Power: The Logics of State Weakness in Eurasia* (2017) and *Political Ethnography: What Immersion Contributes to the Study of Power* (2009). His research interests include social mobilization, identity politics, qualitative methods, the former USSR, and Central Asia.\r\n\r\nRegina Smyth is Professor of Political Science at Indiana University. Her primary research interest is in the dynamics of state-society relations in transitional and electoral authoritarian regimes. She has also written extensively on political development in the Russian Federation, including her recent book *Elections, Protest, and Authoritarian Regime Stability: Russia 2008\u20132020* (Cambridge University Press, 2020).
