G\u00f3mez, Assistant Professor of Music, Department of Musicology\n\n\u201cTheorizing Black Musical Tribute Work\u201d\n\n\u201cIn this talk, I present the beginnings of what I am theorizing as \u2018Black musical tribute work,\u2019 a musical process of paying tribute to a Black musician, living or deceased, through musical performance. I engage specifically with the play of similarity and difference in covering the works of the artist to whom tribute is paid, especially the semiotic capacities of such musical activity. I look to the 2005 album So Amazing: An All-Star Tribute to Luther Vandross as a case study.\u201d\n\nJonathan A. G\u00f3mez is a musicologist studying Black American musics of the 20th and 21st centuries, particularly popular musics. His work is situated at the intersection of music studies and Black studies, with interests in music analysis and semiotics via linguistic anthropology. He is also a jazz saxophonist, and can be heard on pianist Roberto Magris\u2019 album Live in Miami @ the WDNA Jazz Gallery (2017), as well as on several tracks of Geo Trio\u2019s We Made an Album! (2019). G\u00f3mez holds a Ph.D. in music with a secondary field in African and African American studies from Harvard University, an M.A. in musicology from Michigan State University, and a B.M. in studio music and jazz from the University of Miami\u2019s Frost School of Music. Here, I build on my previous work on \"musical qualia of Blackness\u201d (G\u00f3mez 2024) and musical metapragmatics of Blackness (G\u00f3mez 2026) to consider how attention to what linguistic anthropologist Michael Silverstein calls ethnometapragmatic indexicality and \u201cindexical order\u201d (Silverstein 2003), facilitates the musical process Black musicians paying tribute to one another through musical sound and practice. Finally, I argue that such tributes enable a kind of \u201cmetapragmatics of presence\u201d (Nakassis 2017) for Black musicians and listeners.\n\n \n\nTo demonstrate this method, I look to the 2005 album, So Amazing: An All-star Tribute to Luther Vandross, as a case study. Vandross\u2019s position as an understudied yet widely-beloved figure in Black musical history makes him, and the tribute work done for him, an ideal place to begin thinking through this process.
