While many Americans see the Confederate flag as a symbol of racism, many others insist that it is a symbol of “heritage, not hate.” This debate has spurred protests, counter-protests, arrests, and legal disputes. Here, we examine (i) the historical and psychological meaning of Confederate symbols, (ii) consequences of displaying Confederate symbols in public spaces, and (iii) downstream consequences of removing them from public spaces. More generally, this talk will be an invitation to discuss whether and, if so, how social scientists can contribute to socially, culturally, politically fraught issues.

Sophie Trawalter is the Batten Family Bicentennial Teacher-Scholar Leadership Professor of Public Policy at the Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy and Professor of Psychology at the University of Virginia. She studies psychological processes that contribute to social disparities.

The RCGD Seminar Series on the Social Psychology of Systemic Racism meets Mondays from 3:30 to 5 at ISR Thompson 1430. When speaker permission is given, events will be recorded and posted within a few weeks to YouTube.

Series Theme: The Social Psychology of Systemic Racism
What are the points of connection between structures and individuals when we think about bias? In the Fall 2024 RCGD Seminar Series “The Social Psychology of Systemic Racism,” an all-star lineup of behavioral and political psychologists will define what, in their words, makes systemic racism systemic, and how extra-individual levels of analysis could be incorporated in social psychological theories and methods.

Group Dynamics Seminar Series
The Group Dynamics Seminar series is considered one of the longest running seminar series in the social sciences. It has been running uninterruptedly since it was founded by Kurt Lewin in the 1920’s in Berlin. The seminar series runs every semester on a theme chosen by faculty organizer/s who are affiliated with the Research Center for Group Dynamics at the Institute for Social Research. A very important feature of this seminar today is its interdisciplinary nature. Recent themes have included political polarization, evolution and human behavior, and cultural psychology
Whether the 3D incompressible Euler equations can develop a finite-time singularity from smooth initial data is a long-standing open problem in mathematical fluid mechanics. In this talk, I will begin by providing an overview of this problem and then introduce a framework for stable, nearly self-similar blowup, developed in joint work with Tom Hou (Caltech). Using this framework, we establish singularity formation in the incompressible Euler equations with smooth data and boundary. Additionally, I will briefly present recent results on vorticity blowup in compressible Euler equations and beyond, using the self-similar blowup method.",
