"description":"The Picard rank conjecture predicts the vanishing of the rational Picard group of the Hurwitz space parameterizing simply branched covers of P^1 of degree d and genus g. In joint work with Ishan Levy, we prove the Picard rank conjecture when g is sufficiently large relative to d. The main input is a new result in topology where we prove that the homology of Hurwitz spaces stabilizes and compute their stable value. Using the same homological stability results, we prove a version of Malle's conjecture over F_q(t), which predicts the number of G extensions of F_q(t), for G a finite group.",

"description":"Join acclaimed composer, violinist, and U-M alumnus Daniel Bernard Roumain for a dynamic Composers Seminar at the University of Michigan! In celebration of receiving a prestigious alumni award, DBR returns to campus to share his unique creative process, insights on music-making, and reflections on his innovative career blending classical, hip-hop, and other contemporary styles. This special seminar is open to the public \u2013 all students, faculty, and community members are welcome to attend and be inspired by one of the leading voices in American music today.\n\nABOUT THE GUEST ARTIST\n\nDr. Daniel Bernard Roumain\u2019s acclaimed work as a composer, performer, educator, and activist spans more than two decades, and he has been commissioned by venerable artists and institutions worldwide. Roumain is perhaps the only composer whose collaborations span Philip Glass, Bill T. Jones, Savion Glover and Lady Gaga.\n\nKnown for his signature violin sounds infused with myriad electronic, urban, and African-American music influences, Roumain takes his genre-bending music beyond the proscenium. He is a composer of chamber, orchestral, and operatic works; has won an Emmy for Outstanding Musical Composition for his collaborations with ESPN; featured as keynote performer at technology conferences; and created large scale, site-specific musical events for public spaces. Roumain earned his doctorate in Music Composition from the University of Michigan and is currently Institute Professor and Professor of Practice At Arizona State University where he founded and runs DBR LAB, a project-based development and producing space for ASU students.\n\nAn avid arts industry leader, Roumain serves as Vice Chair for the Board of Directors of the Association of Performing Arts Presenters; is a Board Member of the League of American Orchestras; is on the Advisory Committee of the Sphinx Organization and Music By Black Composers; and was co-chair of 2015 and 2016 APAP Conferences.
