Yet, many of our most fundamental questions about etiological contributors to the development of psychopathology and mechanisms of its familial transmission cannot be definitively answered using usual study designs. Drawing from a developmental psychopathology framework and using complementary, longitudinal, genetically informative, and quasi-experimental study designs in multiple largescale cohorts, my work aims to address this challenge. In this talk, I will present a series of studies, including identifying risk factors for and effects of depression, differentiating pre-existing liability toward substance use from exposure-related effects on brain, examining effects of prenatal substance exposure on infant and child development, distinguishing genetic from environmental mechanisms of the familial transmission of psychopathology, and considering whether and how cannabis legalization has a causal effect on children, adolescents, and families. This work also considers broader contextual factors that may influence exposure to risk and adversity, as well as access to protective resources. Although no single study or approach is sufficient on its own, leveraging these multiple genetically and causally informative study designs in a complementary fashion can help us begin to triangulate on etiology and causal mechanisms to better understand the development and familial transmission of psychopathology.\n\n*The talk will be followed by a reception with light refreshments.", "occurrence_notes":"Reception on the 3rd Floor Terrace immediately after the talk.", "guid":"153199-21915414@events.umich.edu", "permalink":"http:\/\/events.umich.edu\/event\/153199", "building_id":"1000166", "building_name":"East Hall", "campus_maps_id":"53", "room":"4448", "location_name":"East Hall", "has_livestream":0, "cost":"", "tags":["Psychology","Clinical Psychology"], "website":"", "sponsors":[ { "group_name":"Department of Psychology", "group_id":"3615", "website":"http:\/\/www.lsa.umich.edu\/psych\/" }, { "group_name":"Clinical Science", "group_id":"3663", "website":"" } ], "image_url":"https:\/\/events.umich.edu\/media\/attachments\/2026\/10\/event_153199_original-1.png", "styled_images":{ "event_thumb":"https:\/\/events.umich.edu\/media\/cache\/event_thumb\/media\/attachments\/2026\/10\/event_153199_original-1.png", "event_large":"https:\/\/events.umich.edu\/media\/cache\/event_large\/media\/attachments\/2026\/10\/event_153199_original-1.png", "event_large_2x":"https:\/\/events.umich.edu\/media\/cache\/event_large_2x\/media\/attachments\/2026\/10\/event_153199_original-1.png", "event_large_lightbox":"https:\/\/events.umich.edu\/media\/cache\/event_large_lightbox\/media\/attachments\/2026\/10\/event_153199_original-1.png", "group_thumb":"https:\/\/events.umich.edu\/media\/cache\/resolve\/group_thumb\/media\/attachments\/2026\/10\/event_153199_original-1.png", "group_thumb_square":"https:\/\/events.umich.edu\/media\/cache\/resolve\/group_thumb_square\/media\/attachments\/2026\/10\/event_153199_original-1.png", "group_large":"https:\/\/events.umich.edu\/media\/cache\/resolve\/group_large\/media\/attachments\/2026\/10\/event_153199_original-1.png", "group_large_lightbox":"https:\/\/events.umich.edu\/media\/cache\/resolve\/group_large_lightbox\/media\/attachments\/2026\/10\/event_153199_original-1.png", "event_large_crop":"https:\/\/events.umich.edu\/media\/cache\/resolve\/event_large_crop\/media\/attachments\/2026\/10\/event_153199_original-1.png", "event_list":"https:\/\/events.umich.edu\/media\/cache\/resolve\/event_list\/media\/attachments\/2026\/10\/event_153199_original-1.png", "event_list_2x":"https:\/\/events.umich.edu\/media\/cache\/event_list_2x\/media\/attachments\/2026\/10\/event_153199_original-1.png", "event_grid":"https:\/\/events.umich.edu\/media\/cache\/event_grid\/media\/attachments\/2026\/10\/event_153199_original-1.png", "event_grid_2x":"https:\/\/events.umich.edu\/media\/cache\/resolve\/event_grid_2x\/media\/attachments\/2026\/10\/event_153199_original-1.png", "event_feature_large":"https:\/\/events.umich.edu\/media\/cache\/resolve\/event_feature_large\/media\/attachments\/2026\/10\/event_153199_original-1.png", "event_feature_thumb":"https:\/\/events.umich.edu\/media\/cache\/event_feature_thumb\/media\/attachments\/2026\/10\/event_153199_original-1.png" }, "occurrence_count":1, "first_occurrence":21915414 } , "151917-21912414": { "datetime_modified":"20261020T125958", "datetime_start":"20261030T123000", "datetime_end":"20261030T140000", "has_end_time":1, "date_start":"2026-10-30", "date_end":"2026-10-30", "time_start":"12:30:00", "time_end":"14:00:00", "time_zone":"America\/Detroit", "event_title":"Author Talk: Chinese Cooking with Food Writer and Chef Fuchsia Dunlop", "occurrence_title":"", "combined_title":"Author Talk: Chinese Cooking with Food Writer and Chef Fuchsia Dunlop: Fuchsia Dunlop, writer and chef", "event_subtitle":"Fuchsia Dunlop, writer and chef", "event_type":"Lecture \/ Discussion", "event_type_id":"13", "description":"Fuel your food fantasies for the harvest season with an exploration of Chinese cooking rooted in the ancient philosophy of the five fundamental tastes\u2014sour, bitter, sweet, pungent, and salty.
