The program includes Franz Joseph Haydn\u2019s String Quartet in C Major, op. 54, no. 2; Derrick Skye\u2019s *American Mirror, Part 1*; and B\u00e9la Bart\u00f3k\u2019s String Quartet no. 2.\n\nHaydn\u2019s Quartet in C Major evokes a spirit of ambition and experimentation with musical form. The intricacy and deeply expressive nature of the melodies across its four movements reflected Haydn\u2019s engaging instincts as a composer. Composer Derrick Skye says, \"*American Mirror* reflects on the coming together of cultures in our society, which consists of many generations and descendants of refugees, immigrants, and slaves, and how intercultural collaborations are essential to the well-being of American society.\u201d The piece infuses influences from West African, North African, and Eastern European vocal techniques and ornamentations with open harmonies commonly found in Appalachian folk music. Bart\u00f3k\u2019s second quartet exhibits his immersion into what he called the \u201cpurest music\u201d \u2013 that of the remote Hungarian countryside \u2013 a style he sought to absorb and recreate as a new form of highly complex concert music.\n\nABOUT TELEGRAPH QUARTET\nErin Chin & Joseph Maile, violins\nPei-Ling Lin, viola\nJeremiah Shaw, cello\n\nThe TELEGRAPH QUARTET formed in 2013 with an equal passion for standard and contemporary chamber music repertoire. Described by the *San Francisco Chronicle* as \u201c\u2026an incredibly valuable addition to the cultural landscape\u201d and \u201cpowerfully adept\u2026 with a combination of brilliance and subtlety,\u201d the Telegraph Quartet was awarded the prestigious 2016 Walter W. Naumburg Chamber Music Award and the Grand Prize at the 2014 Fischoff Chamber Music Competition.
