With an average elevation exceeding 4000 meters, the region poses formidable challenges including hypoxia, harsh climate, and highly variable ecological productivity. Understanding how and when humans successfully adapted to these conditions remains a central question in high-altitude archaeology. This talk synthesizes recent archaeological, paleoenvironmental, and genetic research to reassess the long-term history of human occupation on the Tibetan Plateau. Evidence from Paleolithic sites indicates that foraging populations began exploring the plateau margins as early as the Middle Pleistocene, with increasing evidence for sustained human presence during the Late Pleistocene and early Holocene. Rather than viewing the plateau as permanently settled only after the arrival of agriculture and pastoralism, new research suggests that indigenous foragers played a crucial role in establishing viable lifeways in high-altitude environments.", "occurrence_notes":null, "guid":"153843-21916553@events.umich.edu", "permalink":"http:\/\/events.umich.edu\/event\/153843", "building_id":"1000221", "building_name":"School of Education", "campus_maps_id":"136", "room":"1322", "location_name":"School of Education", "has_livestream":0, "cost":"", "tags":["Archaeology","Anthropology"], "website":"", "sponsors":[ { "group_name":"Museum of Anthropological Archaeology", "group_id":"3760", "website":"" }, { "group_name":"Interdepartmental Program in Ancient Mediterranean Art and Archaeology", "group_id":"3719", "website":"" }, { "group_name":"Research Museums Center", "group_id":"4159", "website":"" }, { "group_name":"Archaeology at Michigan", "group_id":"5160", "website":"" } ], "image_url":"https:\/\/events.umich.edu\/media\/attachments\/2026\/10\/event_153843_original-1.jpg", "styled_images":{ "event_thumb":"https:\/\/events.umich.edu\/media\/cache\/resolve\/event_thumb\/media\/attachments\/2026\/10\/event_153843_original-1.jpg", "event_large":"https:\/\/events.umich.edu\/media\/cache\/event_large\/media\/attachments\/2026\/10\/event_153843_original-1.jpg", "event_large_2x":"https:\/\/events.umich.edu\/media\/cache\/event_large_2x\/media\/attachments\/2026\/10\/event_153843_original-1.jpg", "event_large_lightbox":"https:\/\/events.umich.edu\/media\/cache\/event_large_lightbox\/media\/attachments\/2026\/10\/event_153843_original-1.jpg", "group_thumb":"https:\/\/events.umich.edu\/media\/cache\/resolve\/group_thumb\/media\/attachments\/2026\/10\/event_153843_original-1.jpg", "group_thumb_square":"https:\/\/events.umich.edu\/media\/cache\/resolve\/group_thumb_square\/media\/attachments\/2026\/10\/event_153843_original-1.jpg", "group_large":"https:\/\/events.umich.edu\/media\/cache\/resolve\/group_large\/media\/attachments\/2026\/10\/event_153843_original-1.jpg", "group_large_lightbox":"https:\/\/events.umich.edu\/media\/cache\/resolve\/group_large_lightbox\/media\/attachments\/2026\/10\/event_153843_original-1.jpg", "event_large_crop":"https:\/\/events.umich.edu\/media\/cache\/resolve\/event_large_crop\/media\/attachments\/2026\/10\/event_153843_original-1.jpg", "event_list":"https:\/\/events.umich.edu\/media\/cache\/resolve\/event_list\/media\/attachments\/2026\/10\/event_153843_original-1.jpg", "event_list_2x":"https:\/\/events.umich.edu\/media\/cache\/event_list_2x\/media\/attachments\/2026\/10\/event_153843_original-1.jpg", "event_grid":"https:\/\/events.umich.edu\/media\/cache\/event_grid\/media\/attachments\/2026\/10\/event_153843_original-1.jpg", "event_grid_2x":"https:\/\/events.umich.edu\/media\/cache\/resolve\/event_grid_2x\/media\/attachments\/2026\/10\/event_153843_original-1.jpg", "event_feature_large":"https:\/\/events.umich.edu\/media\/cache\/resolve\/event_feature_large\/media\/attachments\/2026\/10\/event_153843_original-1.jpg", "event_feature_thumb":"https:\/\/events.umich.edu\/media\/cache\/event_feature_thumb\/media\/attachments\/2026\/10\/event_153843_original-1.jpg" }, "occurrence_count":1, "first_occurrence":21916553 } , "153679-21916172": { "datetime_modified":"20261014T124213", "datetime_start":"20261023T121500", "datetime_end":"20261023T131500", "has_end_time":1, "date_start":"2026-10-23", "date_end":"2026-10-23", "time_start":"12:15:00", "time_end":"13:15:00", "time_zone":"America\/Detroit", "event_title":"2026-27 Ph.D. in Scientific Computing Student Seminars", "occurrence_title":"Ph.D. in Scientific Computing Seminar Series: Melody Zhang", "combined_title":"2026-27 Ph.D. in Scientific Computing Student Seminars: Ph.D. in Scientific Computing Seminar Series: Melody Zhang", "event_subtitle":"", "event_type":"Workshop \/ Seminar", "event_type_id":"21", "description":"The MICDE PhD Student Seminar Series showcases the research of students in the Ph.D. in Scientific Computing.
