At the same time, thousands of Balkan Roma have emigrated westward due to deteriorating living conditions, racist threats and increased violence. In this heightened atmosphere of xenophobia, entrenched stereotypes have arisen amidst deportations and harassment. Roma, as Europe\u2019s largest minority and one of its quintessential \u201chistoric others,\u201d face the paradox that they are revered for their music yet reviled as people.
