He received his MFA from the University of Michigan. In 2022, he joined the UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture as an assistant professor.\n\n\nWhyte\u2019s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including at MOCA Georgia, Atlanta, GA; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, IL; The High Museum of Art, Atlanta, GA; The Drawing Center, New York, NY; Atlanta Contemporary, Atlanta, GA; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, France; and the National Gallery of Jamaica, Kingston, Jamaica, among others. Lysosomal dysfunction underlies numerous human diseases, including lysosomal storage disorders, neurodegenerative diseases, and cancers. However, how lipid metabolism regulates lysosomal homeostasis remains poorly understood.\n\nHere, we performed a genome-wide CRISPR screen in Mucolipidosis V (LYSET-deficient) cells and identified ether lipid synthesis as a key regulator of lysosomal homeostasis. Genetic or pharmacological inhibition of ether lipid synthesis reduced lysosome accumulation and partially restored lysosomal degradative capacity. Mechanistically, ether lipid reduction partially restored the maturation of a subset of lysosomal hydrolases and enhanced lysosomal exocytosis, thereby promoting lysosomal substrate clearance.
