Dr. Leah Mascia coordinated the collaborative effort to conserve, identify, and interpret the heavily degraded text, revealing the first known example of a literary work serving a functional role in Egyptian mummification. Her analysis of the packet\u2019s seals and folding patterns shows how Greek and Egyptian traditions converged under Roman rule\u2014raising questions about whether Homeric poetry offered the deceased protection, affirmed cultural identity and status, or helped guide the journey into the afterlife.\n\nDr. Leah Mascia is a postdoctoral researcher at the Egyptological Seminar of the Freie Universit\u00e4t Berlin and former head of Research Field B \u201cInscribing Spaces\u201d at the Cluster of Excellence \u201cUnderstanding Written Artefacts,\u201d Centre for the Study of Manuscript Cultures, Universit\u00e4t Hamburg.\n\nKelsey Museum Flash Talks are 15-minute Zoom lectures by curators, staff members, researchers, graduate students, and guests talking about their recent research or current projects.
