Born and raised in Jamaica, Whyte completed a BFA from Bennington College and earned an MFA from the University of Michigan. He is currently a faculty member at the School of the Arts and Architecture, UCLA.\n\nThis exhibition brings together two central concerns that animate Whyte\u2019s artistic practice: the archive, both personal and public, as a site of disturbance; and migration as a lived experience of refuge, refusal, and reinvention. In Whyte\u2019s work, the archive is never static or neutral. Rather, it is a contested space where official histories encounter memory, inheritance, and the fragments of stories carried across generations. His practice moves within this charged interstitial terrain, between what has been recorded and what has been remembered, between institutional knowledge and embodied experience. Whyte invites the viewer to consider the fluidity of geographic borders and layered cultural identities that have persisted despite societal unrest caused by racial and socio-economic hierarchies across generations. G\u00f3mez, Assistant Professor of Music, Department of Musicology\n\n\u201cTheorizing Black Musical Tribute Work\u201d\n\n\u201cIn this talk, I present the beginnings of what I am theorizing as \u2018Black musical tribute work,\u2019 a musical process of paying tribute to a Black musician, living or deceased, through musical performance. I engage specifically with the play of similarity and difference in covering the works of the artist to whom tribute is paid, especially the semiotic capacities of such musical activity. I look to the 2005 album So Amazing: An All-Star Tribute to Luther Vandross as a case study.\u201d\n\nJonathan A. G\u00f3mez is a musicologist studying Black American musics of the 20th and 21st centuries, particularly popular musics. His work is situated at the intersection of music studies and Black studies, with interests in music analysis and semiotics via linguistic anthropology. He is also a jazz saxophonist, and can be heard on pianist Roberto Magris\u2019 album Live in Miami @ the WDNA Jazz Gallery (2017), as well as on several tracks of Geo Trio\u2019s We Made an Album! (2019). G\u00f3mez holds a Ph.D. in music with a secondary field in African and African American studies from Harvard University, an M.A. in musicology from Michigan State University, and a B.M. in studio music and jazz from the University of Miami\u2019s Frost School of Music.
