He began his career within the Soviet Avant-Garde in Ukraine before studying realist painting in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). Throughout his life he worked across realist and modernist styles that fell outside of Soviet-mandated Socialist Realism. His Execution: Babyn Yar series (ca. 1944-52) is the earliest known artistic representation of Babyn Yar, a Holocaust massacre site in Kyiv. For political reasons, these paintings, along with his later nonconformist work, were barred from exhibition in the Soviet Union.\n\nHaving witnessed two world wars, the 1917 revolution, and political terror, Lembersky reflected on these experiences with candor while imbuing his work with hope and optimism. He was drawn to vulnerable, neglected, and marginalized people: children, the elderly, ethnic minorities, and industrial workers subjected to harsh labor and dangerous conditions. Regardless of their circumstances, Lembersky portrayed his subjects with empathy, dignity, and admiration. \n\n\u201cFor my father, honesty and integrity meant more than anything else. Instead, the exhibit offers evidence of joy, reminders of possibility, and a visual legacy for generations to come. \n \nBlack Birth Joy was born from Lashae's belief that more positive birth stories of BIPOC families need to be seen and heard, and her photographs invite viewers to witness the people behind them: the mothers, babies, partners, families, and birthworkers. They create space for BIPOC families to see themselves represented with dignity and to witness the full range of birth experiences. Lashae's photographs also create a tangible record that can support conversations around quality of medical care, respectful treatment, and patient rights. The exhibit empowers women to prioritize and advocate for their birth experiences while also encouraging perinatal health professionals and birthworkers to center the humanity, dignity, and individual experiences of patients and families. \n\nThe exhibit comprises over 30 photographs as well as stories of mothers whose births were documented by Lashae, a doula and birth\/newborn photographer whose work has been published in Everyday Birth Magazine, an international publication. For this project, Byrne, Clegg, and Narula have been commissioned to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the gallery. In response, they\u2019ve curated six artists to create new work for the pillars over three cycles:\n\nPhase 1 (September 12 - December 12) artists: Amelia Burns (Cranbrook MFA \u201923) and Erin McKenna (MFA \u201920)\nPhase 2 (January 12 - August 12) artists: Sally Clegg (MFA \u201920) and Kim Karlsrud (MFA \u201920)\nPhase 3 (September 11 - December 11) artists: Abhishek Narula (MFA \u201920) and Nathan Byrne (MFA \u201921)\nPhase 3 \n\nCurated by Sometimes Space: Abhishek Narula (entry pillar)\nCurated by CYNK Studios: Nathan Byrne (courtyard pillar)\n\nArtist Statements\/Bios\n\nAbhishek Narula, Compressions \nCompressions is an installation comprised of 416 industrial-grade zip ties, cinched around the entry pillar of the Stamps Gallery. The pillar measures roughly 110 inches in circumference, requiring two ties per row to wrap around it, resulting in 208 rows. The humble zip tie, typically used to hang and bind other material, is relegated to its functional properties rendering it unprepossessing and easily dismissed. The zip tie in this installation, instead serves as an object of aesthetic possibility, pulling it out of its usual background role to become the work itself. The resulting composition is a proposal to dwell, to slow down, and to simply see the pillar.\n\nAbhishek Narula is an artist, designer, and educator who works across sculpture, installation, sound, and video. His practice takes the form of interventions, working with what is already present. He reorients and disrupts objects and sites in order to open up formal possibilities and poetic experiences within the familiar. He is influenced by physical and digital infrastructural systems that sustain modern life and culture. His work treats this ambience itself as raw material for aesthetic inquiry, exploring themes of labor, precarity, temporality and the sublime. Narula earned his MFA in Studio Art from the University of Michigan Stamps School of Art & Design and his MS\/BS in Electrical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. His work has been exhibited at national and international venues such as the Ammerman Center for Arts and Technology, Science Gallery Detroit, Speculum Artium Media Festival in Slovenia, New Media Caucus (NMC), WaveFarm, The Boulder Public Library, The Hyde Park Art Center, Sector 2337 Art Gallery & Printing Press, Tangible Embedded Interaction (TEI), International Symposium of Electronic Arts (ISEA), among others. He is a Robotics Systems Designer and Lecturer in the Robotics Department at the University of Michigan. Website \/ Instagram\n\nNathan Byrne, Equally To Be Loved\nEqually To Be Loved is an image \/ object scaled to and installed upon the courtyard pillar of Stamps Gallery. The image is of a spontaneous sculpture made in 2017 during the first day of an artist residency at the Recology San Francisco A.I.R. Program. The sculpture was constructed in a storage container studio using 14 discrete objects that were in his studio upon entry. For Byrne, this work embodies the energy and spirit of a studio at the start of a particularly fecund period of making. This work speaks to the artist\u2019s interest in embodied experience of space, archival and site responsiveness, as well as his ongoing engagement with found materials. Byrne considers this project to be a far-flung sequel to his MFA thesis exhibition Equally Empty, which was shown at Stamps Gallery in 2021. Equally To Be Loved is the second line of the Buddhist mantra from which both titles are derived.\n\nNathan Byrne is an artist \/ educator \/ curator currently based in Detroit, MI. Through spatial and archive responsive projects, he reimagines, and explores within frameworks such as language, the passage of time, and contemplation. Intrigued by the potential of conveying phenomenal, transformative, and emotive states through materiality, process, and placement, he negotiates the pliability of the viewer\u2019s encounters with objects and environments. Yet two long-standing constraints limit their wider use: they must operate at liquid-helium temperatures, and their design imposes a fundamental trade-off. A large active area captures more light, while a small one offers higher speed, lower noise, and sharper timing. In this talk, I will present two complementary approaches to easing these constraints. The first rethinks the material. Exfoliated van der Waals flakes of an iron-based superconductor produce a fast, self-resetting photoresponse well above liquid-helium temperatures. I will discuss what it will take to achieve single-photon sensitivity. Because this approach leads to smaller detectors, efficient light collection becomes even more important. The second approach rethinks optics. Cryogenic dielectric metasurfaces act as flat lenses, allowing a small detector to collect light like a much larger one. They can also add new functions, such as sorting photons by polarization onto neighboring detectors. Together, these approaches point toward single-photon detectors that are warmer, smaller, and more capable, with reduced size, weight, power, cost, and cooling demands. They could open new opportunities across quantum technologies, photonics, and sensing.\n\nBio:\nPankaj K. Jha is an Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Syracuse University, with an affiliated appointment in Physics, where he leads the Quantum Technology Laboratory. He received his PhD in Physics from Texas A&M University and was a postdoctoral scholar at UC Berkeley and Caltech before joining Syracuse. His research integrates 2D materials, metamaterials, and superconducting devices to advance quantum photonic technologies, focusing on next-generation single-photon detectors. His work has been highlighted by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, the Kavli Foundation, and the Moore Foundation. His honors include a 2023 Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Visiting Faculty Research Program Fellowship and a 2023 Syracuse University Faculty Creative Activities and Research (FCAR) Grant.
