The Art of Memory, Paintings by Felix Lembersky", "event_subtitle":"", "event_type":"Exhibition", "event_type_id":"7", "description":"Felix Lembersky (1913-1970) was a painter, theater stage designer, teacher, and leader of artistic groups. He began his career within the Soviet Avant-Garde in Ukraine before studying realist painting in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). Throughout his life he worked across realist and modernist styles that fell outside of Soviet-mandated Socialist Realism. His Execution: Babyn Yar series (ca. 1944-52) is the earliest known artistic representation of Babyn Yar, a Holocaust massacre site in Kyiv. For political reasons, these paintings, along with his later nonconformist work, were barred from exhibition in the Soviet Union.\n\nHaving witnessed two world wars, the 1917 revolution, and political terror, Lembersky reflected on these experiences with candor while imbuing his work with hope and optimism. He was drawn to vulnerable, neglected, and marginalized people: children, the elderly, ethnic minorities, and industrial workers subjected to harsh labor and dangerous conditions. Regardless of their circumstances, Lembersky portrayed his subjects with empathy, dignity, and admiration. \n\n\u201cFor my father, honesty and integrity meant more than anything else. The photographs and stories in the exhibit challenge mainstream narratives that reduce Black birth to statistics and only amplify Black pregnant women's anxiety and hesitancy about navigating the maternal health care system. Instead, the exhibit offers evidence of joy, reminders of possibility, and a visual legacy for generations to come. \n \nBlack Birth Joy was born from Lashae's belief that more positive birth stories of BIPOC families need to be seen and heard, and her photographs invite viewers to witness the people behind them: the mothers, babies, partners, families, and birthworkers. They create space for BIPOC families to see themselves represented with dignity and to witness the full range of birth experiences. Lashae's photographs also create a tangible record that can support conversations around quality of medical care, respectful treatment, and patient rights. The exhibit empowers women to prioritize and advocate for their birth experiences while also encouraging perinatal health professionals and birthworkers to center the humanity, dignity, and individual experiences of patients and families. \n\nThe exhibit comprises over 30 photographs as well as stories of mothers whose births were documented by Lashae, a doula and birth\/newborn photographer whose work has been published in Everyday Birth Magazine, an international publication. Since many experiments are conducted sequentially over time, an emerging strategy to further de-risk the process is to allow managers to ``peek'' at the results as new data become available and stop the test if the results are statistically significant. The class of statistical methods that allow managers to peek and still provide valid inference are often called anytime-valid since they maintain proper uniform type-1 error guarantees. In this paper, we extend existing anytime-valid approaches to accommodate the more complex yet standard settings in time series, switchback, and panel experiments. To achieve this, we leverage the design-based approach to focus on assumption-light and managerial relevant finite-sample estimates defined on the study participants as a direct measure of the risks incurred by companies. As a special case, our (asymptotic) results also provide a robust method for achieving always-valid inference in A\/B tests. We further provide a variance reduction technique incorporating modeling assumptions and covariates. Finally, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed approach through a simulation study and three real-world applications from Netflix.
