He analyzes how the sea novels *Sanbao taijian xiyang ji* (*Record of the Sanbao Eunuch in the Western Seas*, pub. 1597), *Haiyou ji* \u6d77\u904a\u8a18 (*Record of a Sea Journey*, pub. ca. early nineteenth century), and *Xiyi meng Xiyi meng Haiguo chunqiu* \u5e0c\u5937\u5922 \u6d77\u570b\u6625\u79cb (*A Dream of the Master of Infinitesimal Subtlety, or A Chronicle of the Sea Kingdom*) describe travel by sea \u2013 for example, into a luoji \u843d\u6f08 (whirlpool), or across a ruanshui yang \u8edf\u6c34\u6d0b (\u201csoft water\u201d sea) \u2013 and how this fictional practice details and elaborates the perceived and imagined qualities of water. Lu Xun famously described Ming and Qing novels that abounded with super-mobile human characters as \u201csupernatural\u201d fiction (shenmo xiaoshuo \u795e\u9b54\u5c0f\u8aaa). Dr. Kile departs from this foundational paradigm to look more precisely: what terms do these novels use for moving through air, and how did that relate to water travel? The depths of the seas and the heights of the skies did not function as media for actually existing humans in the early modern period, but in the fiction of the time, humans could travel through the sea, both across its surfaces and through its depths, as well as through the sky in all its vastness.\n\nSE Kile is a scholar of early modern Chinese literature and cultural history, focusing on the intersections of multimedia practice across a broad range of cultural objects, from poetry to props, from novels to gardens. An associate professor in the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures at the University of Michigan, Kile\u2019s first book, *Towers in the Void: Li Yu and Early Modern Chinese Media* (Columbia, 2023), theorizes early modern mediation and entrepreneurship through Li Yu's cultural production across the areas of playwriting, fiction writing, garden and architectural design, theater direction, and body modification. Second, individual-level reservation wages fall with unemployment duration and they fall faster when maximum unemployment benefit durations are shorter, confirming basic implications of search models. We show that the two-pulse photon echo technique is capable of realizing a precise determination of the Rb 5P_{3\/2} excited state lifetime. We describe time domain techniques that track the motion of dielectric microparticles confined by free space optical tweezers and measure particle masses with a sensitivity of 10^{-16} kg. We detect the motion of Rb optical lattices in a buffer gas environment to obtain comprehensive measurements of atomic diffusion. Comparisons with theoretical calculations suggest the basis for a quantum pressure sensor capable of calibrating commercial pressure gauges. We outline a frequency domain technique for the realization of state-of-the-art velocimeters using laser cooled atoms. Finally, we review recent results from a frequency domain echo atom interferometer that uses ultracold rubidium atoms channelled into an optical lattice to realize a gravimeter.
