The value of humanity lies in its capacity to transcend adversity by embracing compassion and keeping empathy and human connection alive in the most oppressive darkness. The project examines this concept through the lens of Ukrainian artists and poets and emphasizes the role of ordinary people in building resilience and saving the country.\r\n\r\nThe exhibition, which will be displayed in the University of Michigan\u2019s Duderstadt Center Gallery from September 14-October 5, 2025, was made possible by a grant from the Arts Initiative at the University of Michigan. Register for the Zoom webinar at: https:\/\/myumi.ch\/D8z9M\r\n \r\n When Pan American Airways began regular commercial service to Tokyo in 1947, it caused a tremendous stir in Occupied Japan (1945-1952). Although Pan Am was not the first American carrier to fly to Japan, the airline brought prestige and influence unmatched by any other in the world. Pan Am\u2019s Jet Age became Japan\u2019s as well. Based upon interviews, archival research, and media analysis, this talk examines the airline\u2019s activities in Japan from 1947 through 1986, when Pan Am sold its Pacific routes to United Airlines and subsequently went bankrupt in 1991. Professor Yano will examine both the role of Japan within Pan Am\u2019s business strategy and the role of Pan Am in establishing Japan\u2019s own \u201cJet-Age nationhood.\u201d What did Japan\u2019s Jet-Age nationhood look like, and how did Pan Am help shape it? The intertwining of Pan Am and Japan during the postwar years served as a critical cross-national bond, as an American corporation within the Japanese political sphere. Pan Am thus became Japan\u2019s global icon, through its dominance of the international airline industry and its domestic media presence.\r\n\r\nProfessor Yano will also deliver a lecture on Saturday, September 20, as part of the series \"A Celebration of Japanese Music and Dance: The Ethnomusicology Legacy of Professor William P. In each of these applications, nanoparticles must be transported through a macromolecule-laden fluid to reach the desired target, whether a cancerous tumor, a membrane, or a polymer melt. For large particles, the surrounding medium is effectively homogeneous across the surface of the particle, so that the transport properties can be directly related to the bulk fluid properties. For nanoparticles, however, the particle size is comparable to the length scales of heterogeneities in the fluid so that the particle dynamics decouple from bulk mechanics and are poorly understood. Here, we combine microscopy and scattering experiments with molecular simulation to investigate how nanoparticles transport through polymer solutions, which serve as a tunable model of viscoelastic liquids, and examine how the dynamics of the nanoparticles are coupled to relaxations of the surrounding liquid. I will focus on our recent work probing transport through solutions of synthetic and natural polyelectrolytes, in which charges along the polymer backbone alter the polymer's structure and dynamics. The physics elucidated in these studies will grant better control over the transport and dispersion of nanoparticles through complex, heterogeneous materials.\r\n \r\nSpeaker Bio: Jacinta Conrad is a physical scientist studying transport and dynamics within soft, complex materials and matrices. Using a broad range of microscopy, rheology, scattering, and computational methods, her group seeks to understand how microscale particles, including colloids, nanoparticles, bacteria, viruses, and proteins, explore and\/or transport through confined and crowded environments. Insights gained from fundamental studies of these non-equilibrium processes inform the design of materials for preventing fouling and corrosion, for remediating environmental damage, and for sensitively diagnosing disease. She earned an SB in Mathematics from the University of Chicago and MA and PhD degrees in Physics from Harvard. She worked as a postdoctoral associate in Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign before starting her faculty position at the University of Houston (UH). Currently, she is the Frank M.
