Attending 1 workshop will fulfill the requirement for the training.\u00a0\n\u201cI see that there is more than one session, does it matter which one I sign up for?\u201d\nIt generally does not matter which workshop you sign up for. There will be a few that are designated for specific groups such as transfer students or for students looking for accommodations. If you do not fit these groups please try to save these workshops for those that do and you are free to choose among any of the other workshops.\u00a0\n\u201cIs this workshop required?\u201d\nThis workshop is required for all transfer and first-year students at the University of Michigan.\n\u201cI\u2019ve experienced harm around relationships or sexual experiences in the past and I am worried that attending this workshop may be harmful for me.\u201d\u00a0\nOur team is aware that students who are coming into the university that have experienced harm in the past. While these subjects recur across the exhibition, what stands out most is not a dominant thematic direction, but a shared commitment to sustained inquiry.\n\nSYS is intentionally structured around a different learning model than project-based courses. Rather than responding to predetermined assignments, students identify their own questions and spend an entire semester developing them through research, experimentation, critique, and multiple iterations. The emphasis is not on arriving quickly at a resolved outcome, but on cultivating the capacity to work independently, remain responsive to new discoveries, and allow the project itself to evolve through sustained engagement.\n\nAs a result, the exhibition presents more than a collection of finished works. It documents different ways of investigating, testing, and refining ideas. Some students advance through material experimentation, others through drawing, installation, performance, digital media, social engagement, or speculative approaches. Each project reflects a distinct methodology that has developed through repeated cycles of making, reflection, critique, and revision. In a sense, the dialectical process generated by the nature of this course is the most significant thread connecting this year\u2019s exhibition.
