Mariana Matos joined as the studio assistant, and later studio manager, in 2024. Over those six years, the business grew from an extension of their design practice to a community space that hosts more than 70 classes a year, open studio for the public, and year long funded fellowships that investigate practice in art and design related to the Book Arts. In 2026, they decided to expand community programming, and to accommodate this expansion closed Small Works, and formed Center for the Book Arts Detroit (BAD) which operates in the same space.\n\nThis exhibition is a eulogy for the former Small Works shop, and a celebration of all the people who made work here. At the clinical scale, latent-space representations enable rapid patient-specific simulation to predict complications such as endoleaks. At the material scale, inverse methods and neural-network constitutive models reveal regional tissue properties and rupture indicators. At the biological scale, growth-and-remodeling models describe how proteolytic injury, hemodynamics, and cellular processes drive disease progression. By integrating these components, digital twins become powerful tools to support diagnosis, intervention planning, and future therapies for delaying vascular aging.\nBio:\nSt\u00e9phane Avril is Professor of Biomechanics and Biomedical Engineering at Mines Saint-\u00c9tienne, France, and Director of the SAINBIOSE laboratory (INSERM U1059). He received his PhD in Mechanical and Civil Engineering from Mines Saint-\u00c9tienne in 2002. His research focuses on biomechanics and mechanobiology of soft tissues, with particular emphasis on cardiovascular applications. His work combines medical imaging, experimental characterization, computational modeling, and patient-specific digital twins. He has led major research programs funded by the ERC, ANR, BPI France, and Horizon Europe. He is the recipient of an ERC Advanced Grant (JuvenTwin) and previously held an ERC Consolidator Grant. He has been a Visiting Professor at Yale University and Guest Professor at TU Vienna and TU Graz. He has authored more than 230 peer-reviewed publications and supervised over 50 PhD students and 25 postdoctoral researchers. Their average age was 23 and most had just graduated from nursing school when they volunteered. Eight of them were killed in action, while treating and saving others. \n\n>Panelist Mary Stolz, an Iron Mountain Michigan resident, kept wounded soldiers alive. \n>Panelist Denny Schoville was one such critically wounded casualty. The helicopter pilot, with a Distinguished Flying Cross, two Silver Stars, and a Bronze Star, was shot in the temple and left calf and still managed to land his bullet-riddled chopper. A nurse stabilized him so that he could be flown to a fully equipped Army hospital in Japan. \n>Panelist Peter Dodge trained as an Army medic and volunteered for Vietnam, but was sent to Thailand to provide public health services. Born and raised in Jamaica, Whyte completed a BFA from Bennington College and earned an MFA from the University of Michigan. He is currently a faculty member at the School of the Arts and Architecture, UCLA.\n\nThis exhibition brings together two central concerns that animate Whyte\u2019s artistic practice: the archive, both personal and public, as a site of disturbance; and migration as a lived experience of refuge, refusal, and reinvention. In Whyte\u2019s work, the archive is never static or neutral. Rather, it is a contested space where official histories encounter memory, inheritance, and the fragments of stories carried across generations. His practice moves within this charged interstitial terrain, between what has been recorded and what has been remembered, between institutional knowledge and embodied experience. Whyte invites the viewer to consider the fluidity of geographic borders and layered cultural identities that have persisted despite societal unrest caused by racial and socio-economic hierarchies across generations.
