These moves privileging quantitative data to explain the\r\nbehavior and choices of the viewer appear to leave a reduced role for qualitative\r\nresearch methods. Even burgeoning methods looking at individual viewers, such as\r\nbiometrics and neuroimaging, rely on gathering quantitative data as a means of\r\nexplanation. In the pre-digital landscape, qualitative methods, from focus groups to\r\nethnographies and in-depth interviews, played a larger part in the audience research\r\nmarketplace. While the delivery method and formats have shifted, entertainment still\r\nrelies on character, storytelling and connecting emotionally with a media text. All these\r\nissues can be gauged in a more meaningful way through qualitative research. This\r\npresentation addresses the role of qualitative research in a digital media environment\r\nincreasingly defined by media metrics. Without diminishing the value of the developing\r\nquantitative audience metrics and methods, the goal is to understand what can be\r\ngained by returning to specific qualitative research approaches to understand the new\r\nworld of multiple screens, multitasking, social media marketing, and fragmented\r\nviewership.\r\nBio:\r\nJustin Wyatt is Chair of Communication Studies at the University of Rhode Island. He\r\nworked professionally for 15 years on both the client and supplier sides of the media\r\nmarket research industry. His book, Creating the Viewer: Market Research & the\r\nEvolving Media Ecosystem (2024), considers market research methods and protocols in\r\nthe digital television marketplace. His research applies techniques from optimization, stochastic modeling, and revenue management to problems in transportation, online platforms, and humanitarian immigration among others. His work has been recognized with the George B. Dantzig Dissertation Award (2018) and the Daniel H. Wagner Prize for Excellence in Operations Research and Analytics (2018), as well as best paper awards from APS (2021) MSOM (2023), Service Science (2024), and PSOR (runner-up, 2024). Daniel is an AE for Operations Research and Transportation Science and frequently serves on ACM program committees (e.g., EC, EAAMO, TheWebConf). Before joining MIT, Daniel received a PhD from Cornell University and was a postdoc in Lyft\u2019s Marketplace Labs.\r\n\r\nAbstract:\r\nIn this talk, I will give an overview of my recent work at the intersection of humanitarian immigration and operations, focusing on two scheduling applications: the dedicated docket in immigration courts for defensive asylum cases and USCIS\u2019s prioritization policy for the scheduling of affirmative asylum interviews. Both settings involve service systems designed to evaluate promptly whether or not an applicant should get asylum, and both settings deviate from traditional FIFO policies. However, in contrast to traditional service systems, both settings involve the benefits of waiting. I will discuss how these benefits can be modeled in both applications to capture key performance indicators, and highlight the impact of scheduling policies on the efficiency and fairness of both service systems.\r\n\r\nThis talk is based on joint work with my PhD student, Wentao Weng.
