Over the past 30 years China's auto industry was almost exclusively an internal market led by foreign manufacturers, but over the past 5-10 years, the introduction of New Energy Vehices (EVs, PHEVs, and Fuel Cell Vehicies), the market has tilted towards local Chinese manufacturers who are designing, building, and selling vehicles not only in China but globally.\n\nAs the Chinese auto market matures and sales level off, Chinese auto companies are learning about being global manufacturers by flooding markets with well priced, quality, and attractive vehicles, similar to what the rest of China has been doing with consumer products for the past 25 years. How have they done this so quickly? How successful have they been? Where are they not as successful? What are they learning about automotive globalization? What will the global auto industry look like in 5-10 years? We will tackle these questions within the Chinese context.\n\nBut we'll also focus in what is going on Inside China. What vehicles are popular, what are the sales volumes, which companies are leading, are any of the 100 or more manufacturers closing shop? Instead, the exhibit offers evidence of joy, reminders of possibility, and a visual legacy for generations to come. \n \nBlack Birth Joy was born from Lashae's belief that more positive birth stories of BIPOC families need to be seen and heard, and her photographs invite viewers to witness the people behind them: the mothers, babies, partners, families, and birthworkers. They create space for BIPOC families to see themselves represented with dignity and to witness the full range of birth experiences. Lashae's photographs also create a tangible record that can support conversations around quality of medical care, respectful treatment, and patient rights. The exhibit empowers women to prioritize and advocate for their birth experiences while also encouraging perinatal health professionals and birthworkers to center the humanity, dignity, and individual experiences of patients and families. \n\nThe exhibit comprises over 30 photographs as well as stories of mothers whose births were documented by Lashae, a doula and birth\/newborn photographer whose work has been published in Everyday Birth Magazine, an international publication. In 2026, they decided to expand community programming, and to accommodate this expansion closed Small Works, and formed Center for the Book Arts Detroit (BAD) which operates in the same space.\n\nThis exhibition is a eulogy for the former Small Works shop, and a celebration of all the people who made work here. These circles depict various, realistic scenarios related to sexual misconduct within the graduate community. The circle process allows circle members to process the monologues, reflect on complexities with identity and power dynamics within them, name potential barriers to intervention, and think of various ways in which they might respond if faced with similar situations. The circles provide a way to foster collective building of ideas, where participants learn from one another and all input is equally valued. Participants are encouraged to share but can always pass if desired, creating an environment where participation is open but not forced.
