He began his career within the Soviet Avant-Garde in Ukraine before studying realist painting in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg). Throughout his life he worked across realist and modernist styles that fell outside of Soviet-mandated Socialist Realism. His Execution: Babyn Yar series (ca. 1944-52) is the earliest known artistic representation of Babyn Yar, a Holocaust massacre site in Kyiv. For political reasons, these paintings, along with his later nonconformist work, were barred from exhibition in the Soviet Union.\n\nHaving witnessed two world wars, the 1917 revolution, and political terror, Lembersky reflected on these experiences with candor while imbuing his work with hope and optimism. He was drawn to vulnerable, neglected, and marginalized people: children, the elderly, ethnic minorities, and industrial workers subjected to harsh labor and dangerous conditions. Regardless of their circumstances, Lembersky portrayed his subjects with empathy, dignity, and admiration. \n\n\u201cFor my father, honesty and integrity meant more than anything else. Instead, the exhibit offers evidence of joy, reminders of possibility, and a visual legacy for generations to come. \n \nBlack Birth Joy was born from Lashae's belief that more positive birth stories of BIPOC families need to be seen and heard, and her photographs invite viewers to witness the people behind them: the mothers, babies, partners, families, and birthworkers. They create space for BIPOC families to see themselves represented with dignity and to witness the full range of birth experiences. Lashae's photographs also create a tangible record that can support conversations around quality of medical care, respectful treatment, and patient rights. The exhibit empowers women to prioritize and advocate for their birth experiences while also encouraging perinatal health professionals and birthworkers to center the humanity, dignity, and individual experiences of patients and families. \n\nThe exhibit comprises over 30 photographs as well as stories of mothers whose births were documented by Lashae, a doula and birth\/newborn photographer whose work has been published in Everyday Birth Magazine, an international publication. Such three-way networks arise naturally in social science research, but their analysis poses challenges. Although substantive questions often involve social mechanisms driving network change, no longitudinal methods for three-way networks currently exist. Moreover, data collection on three-way networks places a heavy burden on respondents, so sometimes only partial information is available. This talk presents two methodological contributions that start to address these limitations: a longitudinal model for fully observed three-way network data, and an inferential framework that uses two-way network data to learn about three-way relations. A graduate of Stanford University's Symbolic Systems program, he took creative writing classes with Adam Johnson, ZZ Packer, and Elizabeth Tallent. After graduating, he published a handful of stories, one of which won an O. Henry Award, as he worked for a small Bay Area UX firm. He got accepted to the Iowa Writers' Workshop the same week he was laid off in 2010.\n\nAt Iowa he finished most of a draft of his debut novel *Private Citizens*, which was called \"the first great Millennial novel\" by *New York Magazine* after its publication in 2016, and received a Whiting Writers' Award. In 2017 he founded CRIT, an independent class he teaches out of his apartment in Brooklyn, whose alumni have gone on to publish 34 books to date. He has written for *The Paris Review, N+1, The New York Times, The New Republic, The Believer, Playboy,* The Nation, and others.\n\nTony's second book is a novel-in-stories, *Rejection*, published in 2024. *Rejection* has been translated into seven languages, and was nominated for the National Book Award, the Story Prize, and the Clark Prize, and received a Jack Galef Literary Arts award. Indeed, the Italian Renaissance artist Vasari identified the ancient world as the time \u201cwhen sculpture rose to its greatest height.\u201d But close likenesses of the natural world are not the only visual products of the ancient past. This exhibition traces alternative visual trends in the ancient Roman world that today would be considered examples of abstraction. It focuses on monuments and motifs long pushed to the margins of our accounts of ancient art. Oversize arrangements of interlocking shapes pulsate in bold block colors from tombs, temples, and homes; stylized animals flicker into view, only to collapse once more into bright geometric arrangements; and artists adopt experimental shorthands for the depiction of space across media.
