Our goal is to create an accessible, supportive space for student-driven conversations where all identities and experiences are welcomed and in which students can build skills and tools around identifying goals and values and then communicate effectively about those. Workshops will be offered at multiple locations and times throughout the fall semester, so please sign up for the workshop that works for you!!\u00a0First-Year Relationship Sexuality Talk (FYRST) FAQ:\n\u201cHow many workshops do I have to sign up for?\u201d\nYou only need to sign up for 1 workshop. Attending 1 workshop will fulfill the requirement for the training.\u00a0\n\u201cI see that there is more than one session, does it matter which one I sign up for?\u201d\nIt generally does not matter which workshop you sign up for. There will be a few that are designated for specific groups such as transfer students or for students looking for accommodations. If you do not fit these groups please try to save these workshops for those that do and you are free to choose among any of the other workshops.\u00a0\n\u201cIs this workshop required?\u201d\nThis workshop is required for all transfer and first-year students at the University of Michigan.\n\u201cI\u2019ve experienced harm around relationships or sexual experiences in the past and I am worried that attending this workshop may be harmful for me.\u201d\u00a0\nOur team is aware that students who are coming into the university that have experienced harm in the past. Our workshop is specifically designed to respect and validate the experiences of survivors and has been carefully constructed to avoid any specific descriptions of violence and focus instead on themes of empowerment, communication, and boundary setting. How do my ideas about my future goals intersect with the work I want to make now?\" At the end of the semester, students formally report on their experience in a presentation called the Sophomore Review, and a faculty panel offers individualized feedback. \n\nInstalled throughout the Art & Architecture Building, the Second Year Studio Exhibition showcases the art and design work created in this pivotal course by our rising third-year and transfer students, and invites first-year students and other newcomers to explore both the building and the creative possibilities ahead. The show features 50 students who have volunteered to participate, yet it honors every Stamps major who reaches the SYS milestone. The pieces on view span a wide array of media and capture a specific moment in each maker\u2019s path: experiments in previously unfamiliar methods, emergent passions, creative risks taken, iterations and reiterations, and the seeds of so much future work.\n\nAs Course Coordinator, Stamps Assistant Professor Pedram Baldari both teaches and works directly with all the faculty overseeing each section to collaboratively support the entire class. He offers this reflection on the diverse collection of work on view in this year\u2019s exhibition.\n\nThese works engage a wide range of questions and concerns. Students investigate memory, identity, materiality, ecology, technology, labor, social relationships, and the built environment through equally diverse formal approaches. While these subjects recur across the exhibition, what stands out most is not a dominant thematic direction, but a shared commitment to sustained inquiry.\n\nSYS is intentionally structured around a different learning model than project-based courses. Rather than responding to predetermined assignments, students identify their own questions and spend an entire semester developing them through research, experimentation, critique, and multiple iterations. The emphasis is not on arriving quickly at a resolved outcome, but on cultivating the capacity to work independently, remain responsive to new discoveries, and allow the project itself to evolve through sustained engagement.\n\nAs a result, the exhibition presents more than a collection of finished works. It documents different ways of investigating, testing, and refining ideas. Some students advance through material experimentation, others through drawing, installation, performance, digital media, social engagement, or speculative approaches. Each project reflects a distinct methodology that has developed through repeated cycles of making, reflection, critique, and revision. In a sense, the dialectical process generated by the nature of this course is the most significant thread connecting this year\u2019s exhibition.
