This annual event, a Creative Growth initiative launched in Oakland, CA in 2019, aims to foster dialogue and collaboration around the importance of inclusive creative spaces for artists with developmental disabilities and mental health differences.\n\nThis year's conference will be hosted in Detroit and Ann Arbor Michigan, and is locally organized and led by the Progressive Art Studio Collective (PASC), with support from the University of Michigan Institute for the Humanities, and Library Street Collective. The exhibition features sixty works on paper completed between 2024 and 2026.\n\nThis body of work responds to Greek Cypriot filmmaker Michael Cacoyannis\u2019 cinematic adaptations of three tragedies by Euripides dealing with the Trojan War and its aftermath: Electra (1962), The Trojan Women (1971), and Iphigenia (1977). The work is in close conversation with Vinyl Euripides (2022), Cogswell\u2019s adhesive vinyl installation on three floors of the Michael Cacoyannis Foundation in Athens, Greece, which also responded to the cinematic trilogy. By following Cacoyannis\u2019 adaptations, Cogswell builds on a cross-cultural history of restaging these tragedies to examine the human suffering caused by war, imperial overreach, and abuse of power; and the dehumanizing consequences of revenge as a course of justice.\n\nWithin each drawing multiple scenes from the three narratives are overlaid within single frames, suggesting the unseen entanglements that bind these ancient stories into such a persistent vision of our human position.\n\nThe grid of paintings encircling the gallery proposes a linear narrative but delivers instead a sequence that loops and turns on itself, a stuck frame that stutters until bursting in flames. The grid also evokes the net that is a central feature of the series--the web of fate and circumstance that governs each of our lives, that determines who we are and what is possible for us at any given moment in history.\n\nThe drawings are also characterized by a repeated motif of hands as consuming flames. Hands have unlimited expressive and narrative potential. They testify to the centrality of making in the development of human cognition. They are reminders of the constructed world and the laborers responsible for bringing it into being. We use hands as a form of communication to shape and express our inner states. Hands teach us to feel and to reason, to count and to indicate. They give us agency, as creators but also as destroyers. The workshop also introduces participants to on-campus resources and provides knowledge on how sexual misconduct can unfold in graduate-specific settings.The ERC workshop uses small-group circles intended to promote active reflection and space to build community. The procedure of circles is introduced at the beginning of the workshop in order to help participants get used to the process, which they do through a circle for introductions and value-sharing for the workshop space. These circles depict various, realistic scenarios related to sexual misconduct within the graduate community. The circle process allows circle members to process the monologues, reflect on complexities with identity and power dynamics within them, name potential barriers to intervention, and think of various ways in which they might respond if faced with similar situations. The circles provide a way to foster collective building of ideas, where participants learn from one another and all input is equally valued. Participants are encouraged to share but can always pass if desired, creating an environment where participation is open but not forced. The pillar measures roughly 110 inches in circumference, requiring two ties per row to wrap around it, resulting in 208 rows. The humble zip tie, typically used to hang and bind other material, is relegated to its functional properties rendering it unprepossessing and easily dismissed. The zip tie in this installation, instead serves as an object of aesthetic possibility, pulling it out of its usual background role to become the work itself. The resulting composition is a proposal to dwell, to slow down, and to simply see the pillar.\n\nAbhishek Narula is an artist, designer, and educator who works across sculpture, installation, sound, and video. His practice takes the form of interventions, working with what is already present. He reorients and disrupts objects and sites in order to open up formal possibilities and poetic experiences within the familiar. He is influenced by physical and digital infrastructural systems that sustain modern life and culture. His work treats this ambience itself as raw material for aesthetic inquiry, exploring themes of labor, precarity, temporality and the sublime. Narula earned his MFA in Studio Art from the University of Michigan Stamps School of Art & Design and his MS\/BS in Electrical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. His work has been exhibited at national and international venues such as the Ammerman Center for Arts and Technology, Science Gallery Detroit, Speculum Artium Media Festival in Slovenia, New Media Caucus (NMC), WaveFarm, The Boulder Public Library, The Hyde Park Art Center, Sector 2337 Art Gallery & Printing Press, Tangible Embedded Interaction (TEI), International Symposium of Electronic Arts (ISEA), among others. He is a Robotics Systems Designer and Lecturer in the Robotics Department at the University of Michigan. Website \/ Instagram\n\nNathan Byrne, Equally To Be Loved\nEqually To Be Loved is an image \/ object scaled to and installed upon the courtyard pillar of Stamps Gallery. The image is of a spontaneous sculpture made in 2017 during the first day of an artist residency at the Recology San Francisco A.I.R. Program. The sculpture was constructed in a storage container studio using 14 discrete objects that were in his studio upon entry. For Byrne, this work embodies the energy and spirit of a studio at the start of a particularly fecund period of making. This work speaks to the artist\u2019s interest in embodied experience of space, archival and site responsiveness, as well as his ongoing engagement with found materials. Byrne considers this project to be a far-flung sequel to his MFA thesis exhibition Equally Empty, which was shown at Stamps Gallery in 2021. Equally To Be Loved is the second line of the Buddhist mantra from which both titles are derived.\n\nNathan Byrne is an artist \/ educator \/ curator currently based in Detroit, MI.
