Curated by Srimoyee Mitra

Stamps Gallery kicks off the fall 2026 semester with an ambitious mid-career survey of interdisciplinary artist Cosmo Whyte. Born and raised in Jamaica, Whyte completed a BFA from Bennington College and earned an MFA from the University of Michigan. He is currently a faculty member at the School of the Arts and Architecture, UCLA.

This exhibition brings together two central concerns that animate Whyte’s artistic practice: the archive, both personal and public, as a site of disturbance; and migration as a lived experience of refuge, refusal, and reinvention. In Whyte’s work, the archive is never static or neutral. Rather, it is a contested space where official histories encounter memory, inheritance, and the fragments of stories carried across generations. His practice moves within this charged interstitial terrain, between what has been recorded and what has been remembered, between institutional knowledge and embodied experience. Whyte invites the viewer to consider the fluidity of geographic borders and layered cultural identities that have persisted despite societal unrest caused by racial and socio-economic hierarchies across generations. In an era of intensified border politics and renewed debates over national identity, Whyte’s work offers a timely meditation on memory, movement, and belonging.

Presented with support from the U-M Institute for Humanities, the U-M LSA Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, and the U-M Library.
This photo exhibition features 90 curated images from the UNESCO-inscribed May 18 Archives. Documenting the May 18–27, 1980 democratization uprising in Gwangju, South Korea, the collection captures the shift from peaceful student protests to military violence and unified citizen resistance, carried out under a complete blackout as civilians and photojournalists risked their lives to photograph atrocities and smuggle film past cordons. Beyond serving as historical artifacts, these preserved visual truths offer a living blueprint for popular resilience against authoritarianism, transforming local trauma into a universal defense of human rights. Displaying these records at Michigan bridges 1980 Gwangju with our present moment, inviting viewers to engage past resistance in the ongoing effort to defend democracy today.

Content Warning: This exhibition contains historical photographs documenting the 1980 Gwangju Democratization Movement, including graphic depictions of violence, state military suppression, injuries, and grief. Viewer discretion is advised.

This exhibit is co-sponsored by the May 18 Archives, Center for Democracy & Civic Empowerment, Department of Political Science, Center for Emerging Democracies, Donia Human Rights Center, Asia Library, and Duderstadt Center.

*If there is anything we can do to make this event accessible to you, please contact us.
The construction of memory and the ongoing reinterpretation of history are living processes. How have Palestinians, in historic Palestine and in the diaspora, conceptualized and materialized their own history, while confronting long standing policies of destruction and erasure? What does it mean for Palestinian individuals and institutions to engage with their heritage in the face of occupation and violence? This symposium takes up these questions with the help of experts in museological practice and historical anthropology. In conversation with the audience, our guests will explore strategies Palestinians have adopted to sustain collective identities rooted in shared histories, while navigating tensions across geographies, classes, and generations.

Diana Abouali is the director of the Arab American National Museum, located in Dearborn, Michigan. Previously, she was an assistant professor at Dartmouth College (New Hampshire, USA); head of research and collections at the Palestinian Museum (Birzeit, Palestine), and director of education, outreach and awareness at the Petra National Trust (Amman, Jordan). She serves on several boards and committees including ArteEast (NYC), CultureSource (Detroit), the Citizens Advisory Committee at the University of Michigan- Dearborn, and the general assembly of Taawon-Welfare Association (Palestine). Diana is Palestinian, was born in Toronto, Canada and grew up in Kuwait. She received her PhD in History and Middle Eastern Studies from Harvard University in 2004.

Rochelle Davis is the Sultanate of Oman Associate Professor in anthropology at Georgetown University in the Center for Contemporary Arab Studies. Her research focuses on refugees, war, and conflict, particularly Palestinian, Syrian, and Iraqi refugees. She authored Palestinian Village Histories: Geographies of the Displaced, (Stanford University Press, 2012). She’s currently completing a manuscript on the cultural training the U.S provided soldiers about Arabs, Muslims, and Iraqis in the U.S. military invasion and occupation of Iraq, using interviews with US military servicemembers and Iraqis. She’s also at work on another manuscript chronicling the lives of Palestinian refugees who fled Jerusalem in 1948.

This event presented by the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. It is made possible in part by a generous contribution from Kenneth and Frances Aftel Eisenberg.
When do corporate climate commitments translate into substantive emissions reductions rather than remaining symbolic? This study draws on a multilevel political economy framework: corporate climate action depends on both bottom-up managerial agency and top-down regulatory signals. Using panel data on large U.S. publicly traded firms, the study examines how managerial agency and organizational capabilities—reflected in dedicated leadership, environmental commitments, and innovation capacity—interact with external policy pressures. A quasi-experimental design compares firms facing differing regulatory pressure across hard-to-abate and consumer-oriented sectors, isolating the separate and joint roles of policy threats and managerial agency. Stronger policy signals increase firm participation in climate disclosure programs across sectors, but reduce emissions intensity only when firms possess managerial capabilities. This decarbonization channel is strongest in hard-to-abate sectors where regulatory pressure is most direct, whereas consumer-oriented sectors exhibit less substantive, more symbolic responses. These findings show that managerial agency and organizational capabilities do not operate in a vacuum, but are activated and reinforced by external policy signals. By identifying the conditions under which private actors convert internal and external institutional pressures into real decarbonization, this study offers large-scale empirical evidence on when multilevel governance—spanning regulatory, voluntary, and organizational mechanisms—effectively drives corporate climate action.",

If still having issues, click this link.
First-Year Relationship and Sexuality Talk (FYRST) is a required, in-person, and peer-facilitated workshop that came directly from feedback and listening sessions with current University of Michigan students. Our goal is to create an accessible, supportive space for student-driven conversations where all identities and experiences are welcomed and in which students can build skills and tools around identifying goals and values and then communicate effectively about those. Workshops will be offered at multiple locations and times throughout the fall semester, so please sign up for the workshop that works for you!! First-Year Relationship Sexuality Talk (FYRST) FAQ:
“How many workshops do I have to sign up for?”
You only need to sign up for 1 workshop. Attending 1 workshop will fulfill the requirement for the training.
“I see that there is more than one session, does it matter which one I sign up for?”
It generally does not matter which workshop you sign up for. There will be a few that are designated for specific groups such as transfer students or for students looking for accommodations. If you do not fit these groups please try to save these workshops for those that do and you are free to choose among any of the other workshops.
“Is this workshop required?”
This workshop is required for all transfer and first-year students at the University of Michigan.
“I’ve experienced harm around relationships or sexual experiences in the past and I am worried that attending this workshop may be harmful for me.”
Our team is aware that students who are coming into the university that have experienced harm in the past. Our workshop is specifically designed to respect and validate the experiences of survivors and has been carefully constructed to avoid any specific descriptions of violence and focus instead on themes of empowerment, communication, and boundary setting. However, if you still have concerns about programming and would like to request alternative programming, please feel free to reach out at SAPAC-FYRST@umich.edu.
“What if I struggle to learn in a presentation setting? I’m an active learner.”
Our workshop is built to meet a variety of learning styles, including time for self-reflection, small group sharing, and resources to take with you to work through on your own time! This workshop is meant to be interactive and inclusive.
“Can I request accommodations?”
We considered accessibility in creating this workshop and selecting the locations in which the workshops are help. However, we recognize many places at the University are inaccessible and we've set an * next to workshops that are on the first floor and lack stairs. These workshops also will have a presentation (other workshops we do not) and are a good fit for those who might need a large font. Please sign up for those if you feel that accommodations would assist you and reach out to SAPAC-FYRST@umich.edu if you are concerned or have questions.
“I missed my workshop, what should I do ?”
Our team tracks attendance at each workshop by having participants swipe in with their MCard. If you are not able to attend the workshop you signed up for, our team will continue to send reminder emails until you have completed a workshop. In this case, please sign up for another workshop as soon as you can as the workshop is required and may fill up especially near the end of the semester. No need to contact SAPAC unless you are not able to reschedule.
“I have had gender-based violence training before, can I get this requirement waived?”
As this workshop was designed with University of Michigan student feedback in mind, our workshop is unique to the UM community. Our curriculum focuses on individualized reflection and because of its interactive nature, each workshop will be unique to the people attending. Although we are excited you already have familiarity with the subject, this workshop is required for every first year and transfer student.
“I’m a commuter/non-traditional student, do I still have to attend?"
Yes, this workshop is required for every first-year and transfer student - not only do we want every student to benefit from having this time to connect with peers, but we also want to make sure your peers benefit from what you bring to our community. If you have any concerns or questions about being able to participate, please contact SAPAC-FYRST@umich.edu.
“I still have questions! Who should I contact?"
Please contact us at SAPAC-FYRST@umich.edu.
Join the U-M Department of Anthropology for the annual Roy A. Rappaport Lecture Series! Associate Professor Matthew Hull will present the fall 2026 series, titled “Incorporations: Capitalism and Collective Life.”

Abstract: “Corporations are often seen as economic actors, but they have been central to Anglo-American governance for centuries—pioneers of democratic assembly, speech, citizenship, and constitutions.
