In this talk, I will discuss our recent advances in optical diagnostics that have enabled us to directly probe the physics of boiling heat transfer. We find that bubbles substantially enhance single-phase liquid heat transfer by increasing turbulence within the liquid, enabling a simple model that predicts the boiling curve from optical measurements alone - without machine learning. I will also discuss our measurements of microlayer evaporation, where a new spatial-temporal analysis technique enables accurate determination of microlayer thickness and accommodation coefficient, and motivates a boundary-layer-based scaling law for the initial microlayer thickness. Together, these studies demonstrate how advanced optical measurements can reveal previously inaccessible heat-transfer mechanisms and translate them into predictive models that provide a foundation for designing next generation thermal energy systems.\n\nBiography:\nMatt Hughes is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at University of Michigan and currently an editor of the journals Applied Thermal Engineering and AI Thermal Fluids. Prior experiments show that upon excitation by light and subsequent reduction, a simple organic chromophore, p-terphenyl, can reduce and transform CO2 into valuable molecules such as amino acids. These photoredox reactions are attractive because organic chromophores are metal-free and can access highly reactive states upon excitation and quenching that are otherwise energy-intensive. However, the steps of the photoredox cycle and the reasons for the low turnover numbers of these catalysts are poorly understood. We use state-of-the-art quantum chemistry methods and automated workflows to delineate mechanisms of steps constituting the catalytic cycle, develop design principles, and leverage these insights to drive the discovery of viable chromophores. The driving force for the desired electron transfer (ET) step to reduce CO2 cannot be increased without simultaneously increasing that for competing deactivation via carboxylation; this indicates the existence of fundamental relationships that limit catalyst performance. Deactivation can also occur via Birch reduction of the catalyst by the radical cation form of the sacrificial electron donor. These steps are highly sensitive to the choice of solvent, as is the quenching of the excited-state catalyst. I will describe our work establishing a protocol for calculating and characterizing excited-state complexes (exciplexes) that are the result of incomplete quenching. While the geochemical, ecosystem and ecological consequences of anthropogenic caused environmental change are well studied and increasingly understood, the impacts on evolution are less understood. In this talk I will address this problem by seeking to answer a single general question: How does anthropogenic disturbance influence the evolution of life? As a case example, I will describe our work on the the cosmopolitan plant white clover, where we are examining how various anthropogenic disturbances affect all major mechanisms of evolution. I will describe our global studies examining whether urbanization affects phenotypic and genomic evolution. I will then explore whether invasive populations can adapt to novel environments in their invaded range, including the role of functional traits and structural variants across the genome in these adaptations. Finally, I will explore whether populations can adapt to rapid climate change through time in introduced and native ranges. The results from the white clover system provide insight into when species are likely to be able to adapt to anthropogenic disturbance, and when they may be unable to adapt. Workshops will be offered at multiple locations and times throughout the fall semester, so please sign up for the workshop that works for you!!\u00a0First-Year Relationship Sexuality Talk (FYRST) FAQ:\n\u201cHow many workshops do I have to sign up for?\u201d\nYou only need to sign up for 1 workshop. Attending 1 workshop will fulfill the requirement for the training.\u00a0\n\u201cI see that there is more than one session, does it matter which one I sign up for?\u201d\nIt generally does not matter which workshop you sign up for. There will be a few that are designated for specific groups such as transfer students or for students looking for accommodations. If you do not fit these groups please try to save these workshops for those that do and you are free to choose among any of the other workshops.\u00a0\n\u201cIs this workshop required?\u201d\nThis workshop is required for all transfer and first-year students at the University of Michigan.\n\u201cI\u2019ve experienced harm around relationships or sexual experiences in the past and I am worried that attending this workshop may be harmful for me.\u201d\u00a0\nOur team is aware that students who are coming into the university that have experienced harm in the past. Our workshop is specifically designed to respect and validate the experiences of survivors and has been carefully constructed to avoid any specific descriptions of violence and focus instead on themes of empowerment, communication, and boundary setting.
