Reviewing *shady* characters, like lazurite and azurite, will shed light on ancient artisanal capabilities, technical knowledge, and even trade connections that reveal the extent to which ancient people traveled and experimented in order to obtain blue. The development in the late 4th millennium BCE of a synthetic blue pigment, Egyptian blue, made it possible not only to paint in blue but also to use this material in ways other than as a pigment. A combined approach allows us to better tease out the variables and complexities in the *chaine operatoire* (procedural steps) behind the creation and application of these pigments, using experimental archaeology paired with ancient texts and artifact analysis. Tracing how artisans and everyday people in antiquity worked with blues provides an opportunity to explore the material constraints and practical choices of adding color.\n\nJoin us in Room 125 of the Kelsey Museum to hear from Hilary Becker, associate professor in the Department of Middle Eastern and Ancient Mediterranean Studies at Binghamton University. His ongoing Metamorphosis series explores the intersection of fashion, identity, and impermanence through iconic sneaker silhouettes layered with cherry blossoms and butterflies. The paintings contrast the fleeting nature of sneaker trends with the enduring cultural legacy of classic designs, using these instantly recognizable forms to examine themes of time, memory, social status, and our shared perceptions of style and performance. This talk advances a framework for human augmentation through embodied social intelligence, grounded in three key dimensions. First, human-centered robot design, where I discuss methods to meaningfully involve people throughout a robot development lifecycle, while balancing the need for general-purpose systems with the specificity of human needs. Second, embodied AI systems, where I introduce my work on robotic hardware fabrication and context-agnostic algorithms that enable robust, real-world interaction. Third, robot evaluation in the wild, focusing on deployments in domains such as healthcare and the need for new metrics that combine experimental rigor with system performance. Drawing from my experience across academia and industry, including building Astro at Amazon and working on critical AI challenges at Meta, I highlight open problems at the intersection of AI, robotics, and human-centered design.
