        "description":"A fundamental problem in spherical distance geometry aims to recover an n-tuple of points on a 2-sphere in R^3, viewed up to oriented isometry, from ~O(n) input measurements. This talk will discuss an algebraic solution to this problem using only the four arithmetic operations. We will show how a new type of frieze pattern can be employed to arrange the measurement data. These friezes exhibit glide symmetry and a version of the Laurent phenomenon.",

        "description":"The Facebook Core Data Science Team\u2019s 2012 experiment on \u201cmassive scale emotional contagion\u201d was one of the group\u2019s first high-profile endeavors in the realm of the human sciences to appear in a major journal (PNAS, 2014). As it turned out, it was also the last. Although the team went on to publish widely in other fields, it has not continued to make available its work in the human sciences. This paper explores how language-processing software\u2014explicitly trained to harvest narratives of trauma\u2014was employed in the study to quantify emotional valence. In an atmosphere of rapid social and technological change around 2012, researchers applied processing software and computational analysis to alter the algorithms delivering manipulated News Feeds to almost 700,000 unwitting Facebook users. The experiment formed a watershed in creating coercive conditions around social media exposure. I examine how emotional contagion\u2014a pre-existing concept in psychological studies but one that researchers calculated and computed in new ways in 2012\u2014was operationalized and with what consequences.",

        "description":"Classical complex dynamics began with an interest in the topology and combinatorics of the moduli space of quadratic polynomials, notable also for its special subset, the Mandelbrot set. The moduli space of all quadratic rational maps is isomorphic to C^2, and we can also understand the space of quadratic polynomials as a special curve within this space in which one critical point is marked as a fixed point. Other natural curves within the moduli space of quadratic rational maps of longstanding interest are the curves in which one critical point is marked as in an n-cycle. In this talk, we speak about the topology and combinatorics of these curves and their bifurcation locus, paying particular attention to how structure from the Mandelbrot set (\"matings\" and \"captures\") can shed light on questions about the irreducibility of these curves.",
