We will begin by surveying four different ways of computing in these rings, due to Billera, Brion, Fulton\u2013Sturmfels, and Allermann\u2013Rau. We will illustrate the beauty and power of these methods by sketching four proofs of Huh and Huh\u2013Katz\u2019s formula \u03bc_k(M) = deg_M(\u03b1*{r\u2212k}\u03b2^k) for the coefficients of the reduced characteristic polynomial of a matroid M as the mixed intersection numbers of the hyperplane and reciprocal hyperplane classes \u03b1 and \u03b2 in the Chow ring of M.
