form\r\n\r\nAs the world population continues to rise, and increasing number of individuals worldwide are finding themselves subjected to failing health systems, subpar housing, malnutrition, and limited or dirty resources.\u00a0 Even now, approximately 44% of the world population (worldbank.org) is living below the poverty line - and that is a very low bar at $6.85 per day.\u00a0 Many researchers and activists across the University are working diligently to identify solutions to the problems faced by these marginalized populations, but there is more to do.\r\n\r\nAt the same time, AI developments in areas related to Natural Language Processing, Human Computer Interaction, and Computer Vision are revolutionizing systems and processes, and giving us the potential to have a lasting impact while addressing some of these issues.\r\n\r\nJoin the Michigan AI Lab and collaborators for a discussion on how to leverage\u00a0AI-enabled tools and approaches\u00a0for meaningful social impact.\u00a0 In this workshop, we will focus on starting to understand the points of interaction between AI and poverty, how existing challenges in poverty solutions can inform research directions in AI, and conversely how AI methods can assist with some of these solutions.\u00a0 UofM researchers will briefly present on some current topics in poverty, followed by table discussions with domain experts in both poverty-related issues and AI.\r\n\r\nThe aim of this workshop is to bring together thought leaders working for and within these impoverished communities and AI researchers, to explore new ideas and avenues to combat poverty.\u00a0 This is a brainstorming session, so please bring your own topics, problems, and innovations to the table.\u00a0 We hope to discuss possible solutions and to explore new partnerships so that we can together amplify our efforts to address this growing problem.\r\n\r\nWith this roundtable conversations, we aim to:\r\n\r\n(1) identify list of challenges and potential paths to solutions\r\n\r\n(2) facilitate new collaborations\r\n\r\n(3) work together on a white paper identifying a roadmap for this space\r\n\r\nWe look But what if compassion could also be a proactive force, anticipating and mitigating suffering before it occurs? This idea introduces a paradox: Can compassion remain genuine when it is planned in advance? How can organizations prepare for suffering that has not yet manifested without losing the authenticity of their compassionate actions? \r\n\r\nIn this talk, Dr. Ace Simpson, author of Organizational Compassion: A Relational Approach (2024), will explore this paradox at the heart of compassion as a (p)response. Drawing on insights from his latest book, he will discuss how to cultivate a culture of compassion that balances the need for preparedness with the spontaneity required for compassionate action. Simpson is a researcher, educator, and author, currently serving as the Director of the Center for Compassion Studies in New York. He has held academic positions at UTS Business School in Sydney and, more recently, at Brunel Business School in London, where he was Professor of Human Resource Management and Organizational Behavior. Ace\u2019s research focuses on cultivating organizational compassion to address challenges such as discrimination, bullying, and disengagement. He has collaborated with organizations, including the NHS in the UK, to enhance their compassion capabilities. Ace is a member of CompassionLab, a community of scholars studying compassion in organizations, and serves on the research council of Emory University\u2019s Center for Contemplative Science and Compassion-Based Ethics. His work has been published in leading journals, including the 'Academy of Management Review' and the 'Journal of Management.'
