The Battles of Lexington and Concord are firmly established in American memory as the culmination of a range of governmental, political, economic, and social tensions that amplified in the decade leading up to 1775. In this talk, Professor Sasaki discusses uneven development between the city and the countryside during this period as one manifestation of these contradictions and examines how it was imagined and contested in cultural representations.\r\n \r\n Tomoyuki Sasaki is a professor of Japanese studies at the College of William & Mary. He is also an affiliate of the Center for Japanese Studies at U-M. He specializes in Japanese history and cultural studies.
