Bjarke defines architecture as the art and science of making sure our cities and buildings fit with the way we want to live our lives. Through careful analysis of local culture and climate, the ever-changing patterns of contemporary life, and the ebbs and flows of the global economy, Bjarke believes in the idea of information-driven design as the driving force for his creative process.\r\n\r\nNamed one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World by Time Magazine in 2016, Bjarke has designed and completed award-winning buildings globally. Bjarke was appointed Knight of the French Order des Arts et des Lettres and the Knight\u2019s Cross of the Order of Dannebrog in 2019 and 2018, respectively. In 2021, he was selected as an ambassador of the EU\u2019s New European Bauhaus. He was named an Honorary Fellow by the AIA in 2020, the RIBA in 2015 and the RAIC in 2014. The Wall Street Journal recognized Bjarke as Innovator of the Year in 2011, the same year he received the Danish Crown Prince\u2019s Culture Prize. Bjarke was also awarded the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale in 2004 and the ULI Award for Excellence in 2009. Alongside his architectural practice, Bjarke has taught at Harvard University, Yale University, Columbia University and Rice University and is an honorary professor at the Royal Academy of Arts, School of Architecture in Copenhagen. He is a frequent public speaker and continues to hold lectures in venues such as TED, WIRED, AMCHAM, 10 Downing Street, the World Economic Forum and many more.\r\n\r\nThis memorial lecture was established to recognize John Dinkeloo\u2019s extraordinary contributions to architecture and commemorate excellence in architectural design. Celebrated for their daring balancing acts hundreds of feet in the air while constructing iconic landmarks, Kanien\u2019keha:ka ironworkers have made a distinct impact on New York City since the 1920s. As their fame grew worldwide in the second half of the twentieth century, the \u201cMohawk ironworker\u201d evolved into a mythical and allegorical figure in New York City folklore and a fantasy of the Western imagination.\r\n\u00a0\r\nAssociate Professor Allan Downey will discuss this paper and associated animation which will illustrate the complex, intersecting ways popular discourse on Indigenous ironworking has influenced contemporary perceptions of Indigenous masculinity. The project explores Indigenous narratives of this history as acts of community resurgence, intellectual sovereignty, and restoration that offers a markedly different interpretation of Indigenous history.\r\n\r\nAllan Downey is Dakelh, Nak\u2019azdli Whut\u2019en, Canada Research Chair in Indigenous History, Nationhood, and Self-Determination, and Associate Professor of History and Indigenous Studies Department at McMaster University. Allan is the co-director of Rotinonsh\u00f3n:ni Ironworkers (2020) and the author of The Creator\u2019s Game (UBC Press, 2018) which received several national awards including the 2019 Canada Prize from the Canadian Federation of the Humanities and Social Sciences.
