"description":"In the multi-media installation *The Butch Closet*, artist Phranc illustrates her life stories as a queer artist, Jewish lesbian folk singer, and \"cardboard cobbler.\" By meticulously re-creating personal objects and pieces of clothing out of paper, cardboard, thread, and paint, she revisits her own history, contextualizing her experiences as an iconic performer, and maker, constructing, reconstructing, and re-imagining her image against a larger historical context of second-wave feminism and queer activism. The institute's presentation of *The Butch Closet* is the second iteration of the project, offering a more intimate and immersive engagement with Phranc's sculptural works. As part of the installation, visitors can peer into a closet built in the center of the gallery designed by the artist. Conceptually, the space shifts from inside to outside, public and private, and explores themes of visibility and that which remains inaccessible or unseen.\r\n\r\nAbout the artist:\r\nPhranc is a jewish lesbian folksinger and queer artist who uses song, painting and sculpture to champion personal identities and illustrate the struggle, survival, and victory of the queer individual. An internationally acclaimed and award winning performer. Phranc\u2019s work integrates humor and a butch lesbian aesthetic. Her current project, Phranc Talk: The Butch Closet, is a multi-media memoir that spans her 40-year career. Phranc lives and works in Santa Monica, California and Vancouver, British Columbia.\r\n\r\n*Phranc is the 2024 Woodhead Visiting Artist at the Institute for the Humanities.*",

"description":"Deadline for applications to the Michigan in Washington program for Winter 2025 and early admission for Fall 2025.\r\nThe Michigan in Washington (MIW) program offers an opportunity each year for 20 undergraduates from any major to spend a semester (Fall or Winter) in Washington, D.C. Students combine coursework with an internship that reflects their particular area of interest (such as American politics, international studies, history, the arts, public health, economics, the media, the environment, science, and technology). The semester in Washington is action-packed. Students work four days a week (32 hours), attend an elective one evening a week, and a policy research course on Friday mornings. They spend their weekends exploring the city and taking in cultural events. Most leave Washington longing to return.\r\nStudents are free to pursue internships of their choosing. They are coached in internship searching strategies, networking, resume and cover letter writing, and interviewing as part of a professional development class that is taken the semester before going to D.C. Students have interned at the White House, the Smithsonian, Congress, CNN, Greenpeace, CBS, Public Defender\u2019s Service, Washington Institute for Near East Policy, NAACP, The Brookings Institution, American Enterprise Institute, National Defense University, Partnership for Public Service, Center for American Progress, Congressional Black Caucus Foundation and many others.\r\n\r\nFunding is available for this living and learning program. Every student admitted to Michigan in Washington receives a $1500 scholarship. Funding above this amount is based on financial need.",
