On view at Lane Hall as part of U-M Arts Initiative\u2019s themed semester on Arts & Resistance, \u201c!!!techn010ffspring!!!\u201d critiques the patriarchal paradigms of the STEM field by highlighting the history of women inventors. This exhibition brings conceptual invention in fine art and performance to the disciplines of information technology, robotics, and engineering. Buckius creates \u201ctechnoffsprings\u201d: complex machines that weave together the history of inventions related to the gendered labor of women, especially regarding women\u2019s social roles as caregivers and subjects of care themselves. \r\nTrained as an engineer and an artist, Buckius\u2019 machines are intentionally complex, layered, and illogical or absurdly logical. In the nature of women\u2019s caregiving, they teeter between order and chaos. Her \u201cdigital tinkerings\u201d tell epic tales of motherhood, technology, female bodies, and commerce\u2014both personal and externalized through women\u2019s inventions and early forays that bridged caregiving and commerce. Buckius' work proposes improvisation as a form of absurdist resistance to, and alternative to, patriarchal, capitalist, production-based, and seemingly rational, useful, logical systems. \r\n\u201c!!!techn010ffspring!!!\u201d is open for viewing M-F, 9am-4pm or by appointment. Moving across cities, countries and continents, family and friends are left behind, and it is increasingly difficult to build a support network. Drawing from personal experience as a female scientist and mother of an infant, I will explain some situations in which being an international scholar has fostered my career, and some in which it has hindered it.
