Est\u00e9vez traveled to Ann Arbor several times during his life to meet with and teach students, deliver lectures, and collaborate on artistic and intellectual projects with his close friend, Distinguished Anthropology Professor and author, Ruth Behar. \r\n\r\nThanks to Behar\u2019s dedicated efforts to build a bridge between Est\u00e9vez and the University of Michigan, our Special Collections serves as the home for many of Est\u00e9vez\u2019s artists\u2019 books, including several one-of-a-kind works of art. To celebrate the work of Est\u00e9vez and the memory of his presence at Michigan, Behar dreamed up the idea of a poetic and artistic tribute to which all are welcome.\r\n\r\nBehar has invited author Richard Blanco, who recited his poem, \u201cOne Today,\u201d at President Barack Obama\u2019s 2012 inauguration, to the university to join her in conversation about Est\u00e9vez\u2019s poetry and handmade books. Jamie Lausch Vander Broek, Librarian for Art & Design, will moderate. \r\n\r\nA reception featuring Cuban pastelitos de guayaba and live music will follow with examples from Est\u00e9vez\u2019s prolific and boundary-breaking career on display.\r\n\r\n---------------\r\nThis event is part of the ARTS & RESISTANCE Fall 2023 LSA Theme Semester.
