        "description":"This week we will discuss duality for equational\/algebraic logic, the fragment of (many-sorted) first-order logic in which we only consider functional signatures and theories whose axioms are equations between terms. Previously we discussed the connection between algebraic theories and small categories with finite products, as well as the construction of the syntactic algebra (or \"universal model\u201d) of an algebraic theory. This week we will discuss the duality theorem for algebraic logic, namely the bi-equivalence between the 2-category of algebraic categories (categories equivalent to Mod(T) for some algebraic theory T) and the 2-category of \u201ccanonical\u201d algebraic theories (algebraic theories that are idempotent-complete).",

        "description":"We consider the graphon mean-field system introduced by Bayraktar et al. in Bayraktar, Chakraborty, Wu (AAP 2023)\r\n\twhich is the large-population limit of a heterogeneously interacting diffusive particle system.\r\n\tThe interaction is of mean-field type with weights characterized by an underlying graphon function.\r\n\tVia continuous observations of the trajectories of the finite-population particle system,\r\n\twe build plug-in estimators of the particle densities, drift coefficients, and graphon interaction weights of the mean-field system.  \r\n\tOur estimators for the densities and drifts are direct results of kernel interpolation on the empirical data, and a deconvolution method leads to an estimator of the underlying graphon function\r\n\tWe prove that the estimator converges to the true graphon function as the number of particles tends to infinity when all other parameters are properly chosen.\t\r\n\tBesides, we also conduct a minimax analysis on the plug-in estimator of the particle densities within a particular class of particle systems, which justifies its pointwise optimality.  \r\n\r\nJoint work with Erhan Bayraktar",

        "description":"The Poincar\u00e9 recurrence theorem states that probabilistic measure-preserving dynamical systems will, after a sufficiently long but finite time, return to a state arbitrarily close to their initial state. This raises a natural question: How long must one wait? The rate of recurrence can be quantified in cases where the space has a finite Hausdorff dimension. We will prove the classical Poincar\u00e9 recurrence theorem and its quantitative version due to Boshernitzan. Some applications will be provided.
