Some bend and sway and some glisten in rain. Perhaps each invites their friends from away to come and show them new ways of play. Let\u2019s have a look and spend the day imagining what happens when we look away. An exploration of encounters real and imagined by local artist, Nicole Ray. \r\n\r\nBio\r\n\r\nNicole Ray is an artist and illustrator living in Brighton, Michigan. She grew up in a small beach town in New York with her toes deep in the sand and her head buried in books. Nicole creates a whimsical line of art prints and paper goods under the name Sloe Gin Fizz.\r\n\r\nFrom quirky animal and vegetable characters to nostalgia-filled interiors and calming views of nature, Nicole\u2019s hand-drawn scenes are highly accessible, infused with a playful sense of humor and a strong narrative quality. \r\n\r\nNicole holds a BFA in Illustration from the School of Visual Arts, as well as a BA in History from Trinity College in Hartford, CT. Choices about which artists you see in our galleries, choices about what relevant facts we share about the works, and choices about what - out of an infinite number of options - we don\u2019t say about them.\n \nPieces in this exhibition were made at a time when the world came to be shaped by the ideologies of colonial expansion and Western domination. And yet, that history and the stories of those marginalized do not readily appear in the still lives and portraits on display here. By grappling with what is visible and what remains hidden, we are forced to examine whose stories and histories are prioritized and why.\u00a0\u00a0\n \nIn this online exhibition, you can explore our efforts to deeply question the Museum\u2019s collection and our own past complicity in favoring colonial voices.
