"description":"Foundation species such as the eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica) serve numerous\r\necological functions and provide myriad ecosystem services within coastal environments. These reefs improve water quality, stabilize the adjacent salt marsh, and provide key habitat for approximately 300 species, including fishes, shrimps, and crabs, among other fauna. However, due to overfishing, disease and other stressors, oyster reef habitat has\r\ndeclined drastically. With increased conservation and restoration efforts to increase oyster reef quantity, there is a need for a more holistic understanding of oyster reef condition and function for reef-associated fauna.\r\n\r\nIn 2023, a Catalyst team comprising 4 Reserves and 4 university partners sampled oyster reefs across the southeast. The team used traditional sampling, acoustic imaging, stable isotope analyses, oyster disease assays, and environmental DNA to characterize the community of reef-associated fauna. Following the field campaign, the team held two project meetings and a virtual workshop to engage directly with intended users. In this webinar, the project team will share the high-level takeaways from their sampling, describe the successful user engagement process, and gauge interest in further participation by Reserves from across the System.",

"description":"A superluminal laser is a type of laser where the group velocity of the intra-cavity field is much larger than the speed of light in vacuum without violating causality. With this property, superluminal lasers can be utilized for constructing metrological devices such as gyroscopes with enhanced sensitivity. To operate a laser under the superluminal condition, a gain medium, atom vapor for instance, with a tailored dispersion spectrum needs to be employed in the optical resonator. The abnormal dispersion spectrum, typically in the shape of a steep negative dispersion on a normal dispersion background, can be produced through placing all atoms in a quantum state where the electron spin and the nuclear spin are aligned or anti-aligned, followed by coupling these atoms with off-resonance laser beams. In this talk, I will present the approaches for realizing superluminal lasers we developed over the past decade, as well as the theoretical models for simulating them.",

"description":"When two layers of a periodic material are rotated relative to one another, a large scale pattern, called a moire pattern, is formed. Although moire patterns have been known in textiles for hundreds of years, it wasn't until 2018 when experiments revealed that twisting two thin layers of a material can dramatically alter its electronic properties. The poster child for new and exciting behavior in moire systems is twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) which can transition between being a conductor to being an insulator simply by changing the twist angle between the layers. In this talk, I will discuss my recent work on mathematically understanding the role of electron-electron interactions in the properties of TBG both from a numerical and a theoretical perspective. In particular, I will discuss our recent result which fully characterizes the ground state manifold of TBG with electron-electron interactions in a simplified limit.",
