Abstract:
The U.S. nuclear industry is entering a new chapter, driven by rising energy demand, renewed public interest, and unprecedented federal support. This talk will explore the forces behind today’s nuclear momentum, including efforts to deploy advanced reactors, strengthen domestic nuclear capabilities, and sustain the performance of the existing reactor fleet. It will also highlight the growing role of modeling and simulation in this evolving landscape. As innovative reactor concepts move from idea to deployment, predictive tools are increasingly essential for understanding system behavior, guiding design and licensing, and evaluating technologies for which experimental data remain limited. Together, public investment, industry innovation, and advanced computational tools are helping shape nuclear energy’s next act.

Biography:
Dr. Emily Shemon is a nuclear engineer at the Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory. She serves on the extended leadership team of the DOE’s Nuclear Energy Advanced Modeling and Simulation (NEAMS) Program where she manages development, validation, and deployment of multiphysics tools for nuclear reactor analysis. She currently leads technical teams that develop high fidelity meshing software as well as fast reactor technology modeling capabilities. She co-leads the National Reactor Innovation Center’s Virtual Test Bed efforts, which supports industry adoption of advanced modeling and simulation through the open sharing of models. Dr. Shemon also has a background in high-performance computing and is on staff at Argonne’s Leadership Computing Facility. She is a graduate of the University of Michigan’s Department of Nuclear Engineering & Radiological Sciences where she received a Ph.D. in 2011.

For the most up to date information on the location, please check the related link the week of this event",

Particularly for brown dwarfs and exoplanets, belonging to a system is
a key advantage for their characterization and the calibration of evolutionary and atmospheric
models. In this talk, I will provide a status update on the multiplicity statistics within the 20pc
census, and lay out multiple ongoing efforts to characterize benchmark systems and confirm
candidate ones with Gaia-Hipparcos accelerations, double-PSF fitting, and spectral binary fitting
prior to the upcoming Gaia DR4. These benchmark systems are also our best atmospheric
laboratories to disentangle confounding parameters and their effect on spectroscopy. Together, these
studies bridge separate populations that look alike in their fundamental and atmospheric properties
but differ in origin, leveraging that contrast to trace their stellar or planetary formation histories.
Biscuits, cornbread, hot rolls, mile-high cakes, steaming cobblers — southern baking holds a towering place in the realm of American cookery. Founded on Native American, English, and African traditions, and raised in a hot, humid climate, southern baking developed in distinctive ways. We'll talk about how southerners over four centuries have shaped their baking around corn and flour and made it their own.

We are delighted to welcome the first speaker to give a Longone Lecture — a biennial lecture series exploring the history of food and drink in the United States. Rebecca Sharpless, Professor of History at Texas Christian University, writes on the intersections of food, women, and work in the American South.

Join us in person (Hatcher Gallery) or via Zoom (https://umich.zoom.us/j/93172475387). Light refreshments will be served, and copies of Professor Sharpless' recent books, "Grain and Fire: A History of Baking in the American South" and "People of the Wheat: Culture and Cultivation in North Texas" will be available for purchase.
Dating back to Guderley’s pioneering work in 1942, the Guderley problem is a classical problem in compressible fluid dynamics describing the implosion and subsequent reflection of a strong spherical shock wave. An initially converging shock propagates toward the origin, strengthens as it collapses, and eventually develops a singularity. After the collapse, an outgoing shock emerges and propagates outward.

In this talk, I will present our rigorous construction of self-similar converging and diverging shock solutions for the adiabatic exponent $\\gamma\\in(1,3]$. These solutions are analytic away from the shock interfaces and the blow-up point. The proof relies on continuity arguments, nonlinear invariances, and barrier functions.",
