We will use the poses to reconnect with your senses, to breathe some life back into ourselves, find internal balance and to recover from the efforts of the work week. The focus is on calm reconnection with ourselves rather than working out. Please bring a mat and a water bottle. Register on our website, see link below.",

"description":"Our brains are metabolically vulnerable, as even brief interruptions in proper fueling lead to rapid degradation in cognitive performance. My lab identified presynaptic function as one of the likely loci of this vulnerability and has leveraged the sensitivity of synaptic vesicle recycling to metabolic compromise to dissect the molecular underpinnings of how local ATP production is balanced during electrical activity in axons. Our work has helped identify critical control points that in turn appear central to neurodegenerative diseases and offer new therapeutic approaches to neurodegeneration.\n\nThe Ryan laboratory at Weill Cornell Medicine develops and applies quantitative methods to understand the molecular underpinnings of synapse function with a particular emphasis on the control of neurotransmitter release and the recycling of synaptic vesicles. The lab discovered that nerve terminals represent one of the critical loci of metabolic vulnerability in the brain which has led them to explore questions of how fuel availability and combustion is regulated to support synapse function.",

"description":"Bio: Dr. Robert B. Hayes is an Associate Professor of Nuclear Engineering at North Carolina State University, where he directs both the Health Physics minor and graduate certificate programs. He holds a joint faculty appointment in the Global Security Division at Savannah River National Laboratory and serves as an Associate Editor for Radiation Physics and Chemistry. A Certified Health Physicist, licensed Professional Engineer in Nuclear Engineering, Fellow of the Health Physics Society, and Fellow of the American Physical Society, Dr. Hayes brings a rare combination of university research, national laboratory service, industrial nuclear operations, emergency response, and public communication experience.\n\nBefore joining NC State, Dr. Hayes held senior technical and management roles across the nuclear enterprise, including work at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant and the Remote Sensing Laboratory at Nellis Air Force Base. His industrial experience includes radiological engineering, nuclear waste operations, radiological technology development, emergency response, technical project management, and applied nuclear security work. This background gives his research and teaching a strong connection to real-world nuclear systems, regulatory constraints, field operations, and mission-driven engineering.\n\nHis research spans advanced reactor concepts, radiation shielding, radiological air monitoring, retrospective dosimetry, nuclear forensics, nonproliferation, emergency response, and radiation protection. He has worked extensively with thermoluminescence, optically stimulated luminescence, and electron paramagnetic resonance to reconstruct historical radiation fields from ordinary materials. He also serves on the DOE-NNSA Advisory Committee on Nuclear Security and the NCEES Nuclear Engineering PE exam committee.\n\nBeyond the laboratory, classroom, and field, Dr. Hayes is an active public communicator on nuclear science and radiological risk, using social media to reach broad audiences and challenge misinformation about nuclear technology. His seminar will connect reactor physics, safeguards, forensics, shielding, industrial nuclear practice, emergency response, and public trust into a single message: radiation is not only something to be controlled, but also something that can be measured, interpreted, and used to build safer and more resilient nuclear systems.\n\n\n\nAbstract: This seminar presents a connected research program in nuclear engineering centered on using radiation not only as a hazard to be controlled, but also as a source of information. The talk will begin with advanced reactor concepts based on natural uranium, beryllium moderation, light-water cooling, high burnup potential, and passive safeguard features. These concepts motivate broader questions about neutron economy, fuel-cycle design, nonproliferation, and how safeguards can be incorporated directly into reactor design.\n\nThe second part will focus on retrospective radiation characterization using thermoluminescence, optically stimulated luminescence, and electron paramagnetic resonance. These methods can turn ordinary materials such as brick, ceramics, surface-mount resistors, insulators, and building materials into passive records of prior radiation fields, enabling reconstruction of historical source locations, radiation energies, enrichment histories, and illicit nuclear activities after the source has been removed.\n\nThe final technical portion will address radiation shielding for space and terrestrial nuclear applications, including metal-oxide-infused conformal coatings, oxide-based shielding materials, neutron activation analysis, and buildup-factor methods. These approaches support improved protection of electronics, reduced activation concerns, and shielding optimization by mass, cost, and performance. If time permits, the seminar will close with a discussion of nuclear science communication on social media and how public-facing outreach can reduce radiological fear, counter misinformation, and broaden engagement with nuclear engineering.\n\n\n\nThe NERS Colloquia Series invites leading researchers, industry experts, and thought leaders from across the nuclear engineering and radiological sciences community to share their insights with students, faculty, and guests. Covering a wide range of topics\u2014from cutting-edge research and emerging technologies to policy, education, and professional development\u2014the weekly talks offer an opportunity to explore current issues and innovations shaping the future of the field.",

"description":"Udo, an earthwork-enclosed settlement in southern Nigeria, provides an important opportunity to investigate the relationships between environmental conditions, settlement organization, and sociopolitical change beyond major regional political centers. Enclosed by an extensive ditch-and-embankment system covering approximately 11 km\u00b2, Udo occupies a significant position within the historical landscape of the Benin region. This presentation discusses preliminary findings from archaeological investigations conducted in 2026, focusing on the functions of the earthwork and changes in settlement activities over time.\n\nExcavations across the settlement and earthwork revealed evidence of architectural remains, collapsed structures, occupation deposits, and diverse material culture. Radiocarbon determinations indicate considerable chronological variation, including a date of approximately 3500 BP from beneath the embankment, although its relationship to earthwork construction remains unresolved. Ongoing ceramic analysis examines variations in decorative styles and paste characteristics across excavation contexts, while sedimentological, geochemical, and palynological investigations contribute to reconstructing environmental and depositional histories. Preliminary GIS-based hydrological analysis also suggests interactions between the earthwork and local drainage patterns.\n\nTogether, these findings provide a developing archaeological framework for examining how communities at Udo organized their built environment, participated in broader material networks, and negotiated changing environmental and sociopolitical conditions. Rather than assigning a single function or construction episode to the moat, the research approaches Udo as a landscape shaped by potentially multiple phases of occupation, construction, and transformation.",
