Changes over the course of the nineteenth century in how Americans voted, from voice vote to public ballot box to private voting booth, also saw changes in the material culture that surrounded voting. Ballots and ballot boxes, campaign pins and ribbons, blank lists and pre-printed party tickets, lanterns and banners–the creative forces of the American print industry filled the country’s cities and small towns with the ephemera of electioneering.

As you look at the items in this exhibit, think about what they tell us about how Americans in the past felt about voting, and about how voting felt. How did Election Days feel when they were full of parades and music and public drinking? What was it like to vote when everyone around you knew who you voted for? And, most of all, who counted as a voter, and who did the counting?

On view September 11-December 22, weekdays from 12-4 pm.

Curated by Srimoyee Mitra

Stamps Gallery kicks off the fall 2026 semester with an ambitious mid-career survey of interdisciplinary artist Cosmo Whyte. Born and raised in Jamaica, Whyte completed a BFA from Bennington College and earned an MFA from the University of Michigan. He is currently a faculty member at the School of the Arts and Architecture, UCLA.

This exhibition brings together two central concerns that animate Whyte’s artistic practice: the archive, both personal and public, as a site of disturbance; and migration as a lived experience of refuge, refusal, and reinvention. In Whyte’s work, the archive is never static or neutral. Rather, it is a contested space where official histories encounter memory, inheritance, and the fragments of stories carried across generations. His practice moves within this charged interstitial terrain, between what has been recorded and what has been remembered, between institutional knowledge and embodied experience. Whyte invites the viewer to consider the fluidity of geographic borders and layered cultural identities that have persisted despite societal unrest caused by racial and socio-economic hierarchies across generations. In an era of intensified border politics and renewed debates over national identity, Whyte’s work offers a timely meditation on memory, movement, and belonging.

Presented with support from the U-M Institute for Humanities, the U-M LSA Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, and the U-M Library.",

The DAAS Faculty Forum will be held monthly on Wednesdays at noon.

Fall 2026 Schedule:

September 23: Jonathan A. Gómez, Assistant Professor of Music, Department of Musicology

“Theorizing Black Musical Tribute Work”

“In this talk, I present the beginnings of what I am theorizing as ‘Black musical tribute work,’ a musical process of paying tribute to a Black musician, living or deceased, through musical performance. I engage specifically with the play of similarity and difference in covering the works of the artist to whom tribute is paid, especially the semiotic capacities of such musical activity. I look to the 2005 album So Amazing: An All-Star Tribute to Luther Vandross as a case study.”

Jonathan A. Gómez is a musicologist studying Black American musics of the 20th and 21st centuries, particularly popular musics. His work is situated at the intersection of music studies and Black studies, with interests in music analysis and semiotics via linguistic anthropology. He is also a jazz saxophonist, and can be heard on pianist Roberto Magris’ album Live in Miami @ the WDNA Jazz Gallery (2017), as well as on several tracks of Geo Trio’s We Made an Album! (2019). Gómez holds a Ph.D. in music with a secondary field in African and African American studies from Harvard University, an M.A. in musicology from Michigan State University, and a B.M. in studio music and jazz from the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music. Prior to U-M, Gómez taught in USC’s Thornton School of Music.

October 21: Justine Davis, Assistant Professor of Afroamerican and African Studies; Assistant Professor of Political Science

November 18: Martin Murray, Adjunct Professor of Afroamerican and African Studies; Professor of Urban and Regional Planning, Alfred Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning
Abstract:

In this talk, I present the beginnings of what I am theorizing as “Black musical tribute work,” a musical process of paying tribute to a Black musician, living or deceased, through musical performance. To accomplish this task, I engage specifically with the play of similarity and difference in covering the works of the artist to whom tribute is paid, especially the semiotic capacities of such musical activity. Here, I build on my previous work on "musical qualia of Blackness” (Gómez 2024) and musical metapragmatics of Blackness (Gómez 2026) to consider how attention to what linguistic anthropologist Michael Silverstein calls ethnometapragmatic indexicality and “indexical order” (Silverstein 2003), facilitates the musical process Black musicians paying tribute to one another through musical sound and practice. Finally, I argue that such tributes enable a kind of “metapragmatics of presence” (Nakassis 2017) for Black musicians and listeners.

To demonstrate this method, I look to the 2005 album, So Amazing: An All-star Tribute to Luther Vandross, as a case study. Vandross’s position as an understudied yet widely-beloved figure in Black musical history makes him, and the tribute work done for him, an ideal place to begin thinking through this process. While Vandross is my chosen example here, my hope is that this method will prove useful to a far wider range of artists, time periods, and genres in Black American musical history.",
