This speaker series is designed to encourage the campus community to think – and talk with one another – about what it means to develop an informed opinion and stand your ground when challenged; and about changing your mind in light of new evidence, different perspectives, and serious reflection. In our Fall 2026 installment we take up the topic of the university itself at a time when its value and values have come under attack amidst calls for reform.

In University: A Reckoning, Lee C. Bollinger, president emeritus of the University of Michigan and Columbia University, offers a bold defense of institutions of higher education as an essential source of truth-seeking in diverse democratic societies. "The university must be defended," he argues, "if the American experiment is to continue." Drawing from his new book and from decades as an academic leader Bollinger will explore the challenges facing higher education today and what universities can and should do to insure the conditions necessary for open inquiry and meaningful intellectual exchange.

Join us in-person or via livestream for a keynote, followed by a moderated conversation and audience Q&A, with a reception afterward offering an opportunity to continue the discussion with fellow members of the university community. Demetri Morgan, associate professor in the Marsal Family School and Faculty Director for the Life Changing Education Theme Year will serve as moderator; the event will be introduced by Martha Pollack, former president of Cornell and former provost and executive vice president for academic affairs at the U-M.

The first 100 in-person registrants will be placed in a lottery for a complimentary copy of the book, University: A Reckoning.",

This talk will explore how cells harness the physics of these phase transitions at the cell periphery to detect subtle changes in their world.

L. Monique Ward
Jacqueline S. Mattis Collegiate Professor of Psychology

Lecture Title: The Sea We Swim In: Exploring the Impact of Media’s Sexualization of Girls and Women

Lecture Abstract: The mainstream media have emerged as prominent forces in the gender and sexual socialization of American youth, with teens consuming nearly 8 hours of media a day. This content is often highly gendered, offering specific scripts and expectations for women and others for men. Unfortunately, portrayals of femininity are somewhat limited, with heavy emphasis on their beauty, sexiness, and sexual appeal, and less attention to their intellect and other competencies. How might regular exposure to this content shape how girls and young women view themselves and their abilities? Objectification theory argues that regular exposure to sexually objectifying content gradually socializes girls and women to objectify themselves, to view themselves as objects to be valued based on their appearance. Doing so is believed to lead to diminished well-being. Most initial research testing this theory focused on scripted TV and magazines, on predominantly White samples, and on consequences for women’s body image. In this talk, I summarize my research that has worked to expand these approaches by testing contributions of traditional and social media, by investigating associations for White youth and girls of color, and by reporting consequences for girls’ and women’s mental health, romantic relationships, and academic cognitions.

If you are unable to join us in person, please click the link below to join the webinar.

Join from PC, Mac, iPad, or Android:
https://umich.zoom.us/j/99095807232

Phone one-tap:
+13017158592,,99095807232# US (Washington DC)
+13052241968,,99095807232# US

Join via audio:
+1 301 715 8592 US (Washington DC)
+1 305 224 1968 US
+1 309 205 3325 US
+1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago)
+1 646 876 9923 US (New York)
+1 646 931 3860 US
+1 669 444 9171 US
+1 669 900 6833 US (San Jose)
+1 689 278 1000 US
+1 719 359 4580 US
+1 253 205 0468 US
+1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma)
+1 346 248 7799 US (Houston)
+1 360 209 5623 US
+1 386 347 5053 US
+1 507 473 4847 US
+1 564 217 2000 US
+1 778 907 2071 Canada
+1 780 666 0144 Canada
+1 204 272 7920 Canada
+1 438 809 7799 Canada
+1 587 328 1099 Canada
+1 647 374 4685 Canada
+1 647 558 0588 Canada
Webinar ID: 990 9580 7232
International numbers available: https://umich.zoom.us/u/al2XftQSw",

Further, the academic research model, with its resource-segregated networks, discipline-specific training, and short-term productivity metrics, contributes to a fragmented and potentially misleading understanding of the social world.
Robotics Department Seminar Series (https://robotics.umich.edu/events/robotics-seminar-series/)
Speaker: Sunil K. Agrawal
Edwin H. Armstrong Professor of Mechanical Engineering | Professor of Rehabilitation and Regenerative Medicine, Columbia University

Title: "Rehabilitation Robotics Improving Everyday Human Functions"
Date: Thursday, October 8, 2026
Time: 4:00 - 5:00pm ET
Location: FRB Rm 2300 + Zoom
Zoom Link: https://myumi.ch/4xbmw
Meeting ID: 971 2373 1172
Passcode: 468244

Abstract: Neural disorders, old age, and traumatic brain injury limit activities of daily living. Robotics can be used in novel ways to characterize human neuromuscular responses and retrain human functions. Columbia University Robotics and Rehabilitation (ROAR) Laboratory designs innovative robotics with these goals and performs scientific studies for human functions such as standing, walking, trunk control, head turning, and others. Human experiments have targeted individuals with stroke, cerebral palsy, Parkinson’s disease, spinal cord injury, ALS, and older adults. The talk will provide an overview of these robotic technologies and scientific studies performed with them to demonstrate the potential of rehabilitation robotics to positively improve human functions and quality of life of people.

Speaker Bio: Sunil Agrawal received a Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University in 1990. He is currently a Professor and Director of Robotics and Rehabilitation (ROAR) Laboratory at Columbia University, located both in engineering and medical campuses of the university. Dr. Agrawal has published more than 500 journal and conference papers, 20 U.S. patents, and 4 books. He is a Fellow of the ASME and AIMBE. His honors include a NSF Presidential Faculty Fellowship from the White House in 1994, a Bessel Prize from Germany in 2003, and a Humboldt US Senior Scientist Award in 2007. He is a recipient of 2016 Machine Design Award from ASME for “seminal contributions to design of robotic exoskeletons for gait training of stroke patients” and 2016 Mechanisms and Robotics Award from the ASME for “cumulative contributions and being an international leading figure in mechanical design and robotics”. He is a 2023 recipient of a Paintal Chair from Indian National Science Academy. He was a Plenary Speaker at the 2024 IEEE International Conference in Robotics and Automation in Yokohama. He has successfully directed 40+ PhD student theses and has received Best Paper awards in ASME and IEEE sponsored robotics conferences. He is the founding Editor-in-Chief of the journal “Wearable Technologies” published by Cambridge University Press. He organized the IEEE BioRob 2020 conference in New York City and served as its conference chair.",
