RCGD Fall 2026 Seminar Series: Global Perspectives on Culture & Health, meets Mondays 3:30 to 5 at ISR Thompson 1430.

Global Perspectives on Culture and Health explores fundamental aspects of human life. Culture facilitates human interaction by providing meaning to lived experience. Accounting for culture in both theories and methods potentially advances the study of health by connecting the macro and micro levels of human experience. Yet, culture should be understood as dynamic and complex. It fundamentally shapes individuals and simultaneously is shaped by individuals. The importance of systematically attending to culture includes topics of values, language, immigration, and society.

Theories and methods that incorporate culture hold great potential for advancing the understanding of health outcomes and health trajectories in various global contexts.

The speakers for this series will focus on various aspects of culture and diverse groups living in the U.S. and across the globe to address the ways in which attending to culture helps clarify and overcome challenges to good health.

The Group Dynamics Seminar series is considered one of the longest running seminar series in the social sciences. It has been running uninterruptedly since it was founded by Kurt Lewin in the 1920’s in Berlin. The seminar series runs every semester on a theme chosen by faculty organizer/s who are affiliated with the Research Center for Group Dynamics at the Institute for Social Research. A very important feature of this seminar today is its interdisciplinary nature. Recent themes have included political polarization, evolution and human behavior, and cultural psychology.

In person: ISR Thompson 1430, unless otherwise specified.
Organized by Kristine Ajrouch and Sela Panapasa
Events are not recorded, but as permissions allow, interviews with speakers are later posted to our YouTube playlist.
This Coffee Talk will bring together scholars and practitioners to explore the future of the Great Lakes Compact and the broader governance systems that support transboundary freshwater management in an era of accelerating climate, ecological, and social change. As pressures on water resources intensify—from shifting precipitation patterns and lake level variability to growing demands from communities, agriculture, industry, and ecosystems—the resilience of existing governance frameworks is increasingly being tested.

The conversation will examine how institutions such as the Great Lakes Compact, along with binational and regional organizations, can be “future-proofed” to remain adaptive, equitable, and scientifically informed under deep uncertainty. Together, the panel will reflect on what it means to design water governance systems that are not only robust in the present, but flexible enough to endure—and evolve with—the uncertainties of the future Great Lakes region and beyond.

You can register for the Coffee Talk on the Water@Michigan Coffee Talks webpage: https://graham.umich.edu/wateratmichigan/coffee-talks

About the speakers:
Moderator: Andrew Gronewold, Associate Professor SEAS and PI for the Global Center for Climate Change and Transboundary Waters
Panelists: David Naftzger, Executive Director, Great Lakes Governors and Premiers; Peter Johnson, Deputy Director, Great Lakes Governors and Premiers; Marc Gaden, Adjunct Professor, SEAS and Executive Secretary, Great Lakes Fishery Commission and Vianey Rueda, PhD Candidate, SEAS
Nanoparticles derived from amphiphilic hybrid block copolymers (HBCs) have been recognized as promising candidates for a range of applications, including bioimaging, therapeutic delivery, and diagnostics. Comprised of chemically distinct blocks with differing architectures, these unique polymer frameworks exhibit properties that surpass those of conventional amphiphilic polymers. However, a lack of synthetic feasibility has hindered the widespread adoption of amphiphilic HBCs due to challenges posed by the distinct solubility of the blocks, the steric effects of the branched block on copolymerization and purification of end products, and the difficulty of preparing amphiphilic HBCs. Herein, we report the use of aqueous reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization to form amphiphilic HBCs and assess their potential as biomaterials for theranostic applications. Comprised of chemically distinct blocks with differing architectures (i.e., dendritic and grafted/linear), these unique polymer frameworks were strategically designed to self-assemble into nanoparticles ideal for simultaneous bioimaging and therapy. The synthesis, physicochemical characterization, and in vitro cell viability of a library of dendritic HBCs and their resulting nanoparticles are discussed. Microscopy (TEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) analyses support the formation of aqueous dispersions, yielding polymeric nanoparticles with sizes < 120 nm. The resulting polymer hybrids and their nanoparticles exhibited minimal cell toxicity and dual imaging and therapeutic potential. Results indicate that these polymers and their nanoparticles exhibit properties surpassing those of conventional amphiphilic polymers. This study exemplifies the effect of polymer topology on nanomaterial properties and expands the design space of RAFT polymerization in biomedical research.
Abstract: Soliton gases for integrable systems is a rapidly developing new area in the theory of nonlinear waves. For a given spectral support set, a soliton gas of maximal average intensity is called soliton condensate. A spectral support set for a fNLS soliton condensate is often represented by a finite collection of points (anchors) E in the upper half plane H, connected with each other and/or with the real axis by some set of (Schwarz symmetrical) arcs. Given a set of anchors E, a natural question is to find a collection of such arcs that produces fNLS soliton condensate of minimal average intensity. That leads to a modification of the well-known Chebotarev’s continuum problem, which consists in finding a continuum K ⊂ C of minimal logarithmic capacity that contains a given set of anchors E ⊂ C. In this talk, we discuss our solution to the modified Chebotarev’s problem, where E and K are subsets of the upper half plane H and where we minimize the Dirichlet energy of H \\ K instead of the logarithmic capacity of K. This is a joint work with Marco Bertola.",
